Chapter Fifteen

I didn’t know how long I ran for, but I kept running even when my sides had started to hurt and cramp. I kept running, tears long since drying on my cheeks as I kept going. I didn’t want to stop. If I kept running, I was keeping my mind off of what had just happened.

I gasped as my sides started to hurt worse, causing my steps to falter. I moved slowly as I leaned myself against a tree, the bark rough against the palms of my hands.

Lurching to the left, I puked up whatever was in my stomach, whimpering as I gagged. I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand as I moved away from the pile of vomit. Legs shaky, I let myself fall to my knees, not at all caring about the bruises that would no doubt form. My chest was heaving as I sat there, tears once again leaking from my eyes. Whimpering, I rubbed my face on my arm trying to make the tears go away.

Slowly, my breathing regulated and my tears trickled to a stop; my body throbbed as exhaustion settled deep in my bones. Glancing around my surroundings, I tried to figure out where I was. Nothing looked familiar; Trees, grass, and a lone road to my left. No noticeable landmarks or street signs. Great, not only was I dead tired, as well as emotionally and physically drained, but now I was alone and lost.

“Fuck my life . . .” My words were whispered as I tried to think of what to do. It was still dark out, the middle of the night, and I was out in the open, alone and lost. I had my ‘bug out’ bag, a bat, and a flashlight—which would no doubt draw people and things to me like a moth to a flame, but I really didn’t want to shut it off.

Just the thought of being alone in the pitch darkness sent shivers down my spine, maybe if I kept it pointed at the ground it would be less of a beacon. Mind made up, I lowered it towards my shoes, glad that Kim suggested we sleep with them on just in case.

My heart seized at the thought of Kim, my tears welling up again. Sniffling, I tilted my head back to try and stem them. I didn’t have time to sit around and cry, I had to move, to find someplace safe. Gazing up at the stars calmed me a bit, their bright, twinkling giving me hope and calming my nerves. A lot had changed over the last few days, but some things would always be the same.

Lowering my gaze back to my illuminated feet, I glanced to my left where the lone road was. If I followed it, I was bound to find something; roads didn't just lead to nowhere . . . well most of the time they didn’t. Glancing left and right, I chewed on my bottom lip as I tried to choose which way to go.
