CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Verity was in the garden when Jasper returned home. He slid open the French doors and joined her on the patio. “Is everything all right?” she asked.

A long sigh escaped his lips. “Everything is fine. Just a bad morning with work. It’s all sorted now,” he lied, not wanting to get into to it with Verity.

She leaned in and kissed his lips. “How about I make us lunch?”

Jasper reached across the table and squeezed her hand. “What would I do without you.”

While Verity was busy with lunch, Jasper went to his office. The allegations played heavily on his mind. Who was this woman? HR’s number appeared on his phone, but he ignored it.

“I have no bloody idea who this woman could be…” he mumbled.

Soon, Verity called, “Jasper, lunch is ready.”

Jasper came down to the dining room. He settled in a chair. Verity entered the room juggling a casserole dish. She reached across the table and placed the dish down. Jasper gasped when he saw her hand. “What happened?”

“Oh, it looks worse than it is. I burnt myself while retrieving the dish from the oven.”

“Put some burn gel on it. I have some in the bottom left cupboard.”

“Yes, I found it. Never mind my hand. Come on, let’s eat. I hope you like it.”

Jasper put all thoughts of his morning out of his head, smiling endearingly at Verity. “This is amazing!”

A look of pride appeared on her face. “Thank you. It’s actually one of Aspen’s recipes. She taught me how to cook when we were teenagers. This one was always my favourite. It reminds me of my mother.”

Jasper noticed sadness cloud Verity’s features. He placed his knife and fork down. “You never really told me much about your childhood.”

Verity cut away from his gaze. “I don’t really like to talk about that part of my life. It wasn’t a happy time. That’s all you need to know.”

Jasper changed the conversation. “Loki and Zeus are getting spoilt by Aspen. They seemed to have settled in well.”

Verity smiled. “I’m glad to hear it. They will be in good hands with her.”

Jasper felt the change of subject did not account for the complete change in Verity’s demeanour. But he focused on the meal.

After lunch, Verity excused herself and retreated for a nap. As she closed the door, Jasper returned to his office. Seeing the empty dog basket, a wave of sadness washed over him. He missed Loki and Zeus so much.

Before the end of the workday, HR called his mobile.

“Hi Jasper,” Jody’s voice crackled over the line. “Thomas requested that I reach out to you. We received another call, and it’s quite concerning. The woman involved, whose identity remains undisclosed, has submitted pictures of alleged abuse. It doesn’t look good, Jasper.”

Jasper’s frustration boiled over. “I need to know who this woman is, Jody,” he demanded.

Jody sensed Jasper’s frustration. “Calm down, Jasper. Yelling at me won’t help. I don’t have all the answers, but I recommend maintaining a low profile – not just at work.
