Thurgood Marshall. After the ruling, Marshall and the NAACP began working on a plan for integration. Due to political realities, President Eisenhower and Chief Justice Earl Warren both agreed to demand states only integrate “with all deliberate speed.” This contradicted the 1956 deadline for nationwide integration that Marshall had proposed. At the same time, Marshall criticized the growth of black militancy. Tragedies like the murder of fourteen-year-old Emmett Till marked this aggressive turn in the civil rights movement. When Martin Luther King Jr. led the Montgomery bus boycotts, Marshall was supportive, but cautious. King often operated without the consent or involvement of the NAACP because the organization had different plans for ending inequality. Publicly, however, Marshall remained a strong supporter of King and his nonviolent movement.
