Manius knew the events of the summer of 415 well. When Yannus asked how Athaulf responded to the truli insults of the Silings, the failure of the attempted invasion of the Balearica Islands and the subsequent loss of the fleet, Manius had the answers.

“Yannus, Athaulf was assassinated in the summer of that year. One of Saurus’ oathsworn managed to infiltrate the king’s domestic staff and stab him whilst he was bathing. It was almost certainly a Gruethungi plot designed to take advantage of the setbacks the Goths were suffering. Sigirus, Saurus’ brother, declared himself king without an election and had his followers kill Athaulf’s brother, his designated heir, and several of his children. Fortunately, Lord Indulf was in Caesaraugusta at the time and survived.”

“So Sigirus became King of the Goths. I did not know that.”

“Sigirus was king for seven days before the Trevingi struck back and killed the new King and his key supporters. It seemed that an internal war was inevitable before the respected Beremundas calmed the situation by calling for an election. Neither the Gruethungi nor Trevingi would accept a king from the other clan and so Wallia was elected king. He was popular with the other Goth clans and even the Trevingi and Gruethungi clans had to acknowledge that he was the most successful warband leader.”

Thank you for that excellent summary, Manius. The election of Wallia as King of the Goths would make a dramatic impact on the Vandals.
