Chapter Eleven
There was allowed to be a skeleton crew between stops after Omaha, as staff members took it in turn to get some rest. By the time we passed Lincoln, plenty of people were getting tired, and made the most of the ninety minutes or so before the next stop.
We had crew sleeping quarters, which was in four lower-level roomettes. Not especially spacious, and certainly not private. There were a couple of reclining chairs on either side of the window, and a pull-down bunkbed. When I checked, the first three rooms were full, staff members snoozing on all the chairs and beds. Reminded me of the army â grab some sleep whenever, wherever, and however you could. There was one recliner left in the last roomette, but I wasnât going to use it; I was just checking the rooms, getting the lay of the land, figuring out who was where.
I was surprised to see Hassan asleep in one of the recliners, but then thought it actually made sense; if the robbery was going to occur sometime in the late morning of the following day â or actually later today, I corrected myself as I checked my watch â then why not get some sleep now? I might have done the same thing in his place. It showed how relaxed these guys were, how experienced. Back in the Rangers, it was always the rookies who had trouble sleeping before missions. Old hands might even sleep on the chopper, as they were transported to the battlefield, knowing they would need it, and not knowing when they might get another chance. Newbies might understand they should rest on an intellectual level, but physiologically, they just couldnât let go. Their stress levels were simply too high.
The fact that Hassan was sleeping was a good and a bad sign, all at once. On the negative side, it meant that I was up against serious opposition, people who knew what they were doing. On the positive side, that also meant that they probably wouldnât do anything stupid, like start randomly shooting the passengers, or any other crazed behavior that amateurs might do once the panic hit them.
I was still worried about Simpson and that damn phone of his. Did he suspect that Iâd taken it from him? He didnât seem to act any differently with me, but that was no guarantee â these guys were good, and would certainly be capable of keeping those thoughts well hidden. It hadnât helped that there had been nobody out on the platform, when weâd gone to check on what Kane had been barking at; by the time weâd got there, it was empty, everyone back onboard the train. Iâd kept the ruse going, told him Iâd take Kane up and down the train, see if he responded to anything. Heâd come with me for a while, until he was asked by Gary to go and relieve one of the other guys.
I let out a sigh as I closed the door to the fourth and last staff roomette.
