Better late than never. Hugo waved his arms in a desperate attempt to get the cars in front of him to move. But something blocked the way ahead. Bianchi gripped the steering wheel so hard that his knuckles turned white. He slammed his palm on the horn.

“Out of the way!”

Eventually, a couple of cars pulled to the side, and they could push past. Hugo pumped his hand in the air.

“Nice!” He turned halfway around and asked, “Freya, you got anything from Sussie?”

Freya chuckled and replied, “Yep, she just sent an update. There has been some sort of attack on the Australian Embassy, but exactly what happened is still unclear.”

“What do you mean?”

Freya shrugged. “According to what Sussie sent us, more than half of the embassy’s staff were affected.”

“What do you mean, affected?”

“Most of the victims were in a conference when everyone started to feel sick. A bunch of them started vomiting, and a couple fainted. All in a matter of seconds.”

“Anyone dead?”

“No—it doesn’t look like it so far, anyway.”

Hugo turned in his seat and stared at the traffic while Bianchi deftly steered them toward the embassy.

“What could affect people that way?”

Mikko cleared his throat and said, “A couple months ago, I read an internal memo about a kind of microwave weapon that might have been used in some terror attacks. It started a couple of years ago. Some embassies in a few countries reported that their staff had become ill in the most bizarre way. The victims said they heard strange sounds and vibrations, and at the same time, they suddenly got sick. A couple of them had permanent injuries, which was a big problem, especially for the Americans—their diplomats got sick far more often than other countries.”

Bianchi pointed and said, “We’re almost there.”

They drove to the entrance of the Australian Embassy, but Bianchi had to stop when an ambulance passed in front of them. Ahead, chaos unfolded. A dozen ambulances were parked facing the embassy, and police cars blocked the street. Cops were standing in the road, directing traffic.

Hugo clenched his jaw. “This is big.”

Bianchi opened the door and rushed to a couple of police officers. Hugo and the others jumped out and made their way to the roadblocks. A stream of people was pouring out from the embassy. Some could get out on their own, while others had to be helped. People shouted and screamed, and a sense of panic permeated the air.

Hugo got closer and saw two paramedics carrying a young man on a stretcher through the stopped cars and the crowds.

As they passed him, Hugo heard the man moaning, “Sofia. Sofia.”

Two officers rushed to the roadblocks and gestured for Hugo and the others to get away. “Save!” they shouted. Get lost!

Hugo pointed to Bianchi, who was headed toward them. “We’re with him!”

Before the police could answer, a young woman ran up to the man on the stretcher.

“Noah!”

Bianchi tugged on Hugo’s arm. “We can’t do much here,” he said. “The attack’s already over, and the perps are already gone.
