The Christmas lights in Knightsbridge, Regent Street, and Oxford Street sparkled into the darkness leaving Ottilie breathless.

‘Mama, this is so beautiful. I feel as though I’ve been in hibernation like a little hedgehog. Papa never wants to do anything like this. Thank you for bringing me here.’

Camille grinned and clutched her daughter closer to her, hugging her and enjoying her moment of happiness. ‘It’s my pleasure, Ottilie. I knew you would love it, and the dress you chose is perfect for tomorrow’s celebrations. I can’t wait to see you wear it, and of course, the Carruthers children. I sincerely hope they can find some enjoyment tomorrow, even though they have sadly lost their beloved Mama.’

‘It was so kind of you, Mama, to invite them to Birdcage Mews. I know they’ll still be sad. Losing ones Mama is a dreadful thing, but we’ll try to make them happy, won’t we?’

‘Of course we will, and Knolly’s Christmas lunch will cheer them up, I have no doubt. She’s planning some wonderful things I hear.’

‘Oh my goodness, yes she is. She showed me this afternoon. My mouth was watering all the time.’

‘On that note, shall we go to Selfridges and have some afternoon tea. I’m sure you’ll love it there.’

‘Am I allowed? I thought it was only for ladies.’

Camille threw her head back and laughed. ‘Yes, you’re allowed, silly girl. And you are a lady, my darling. Lady Ottilie Divine.’

Ottilie grinned up at her. ‘So I am.’
