Jessup saw the flashing emergency lights in his rearview mirror, but they were a quarter mile back. Around him, cars had backed off a couple of lengths, no doubt from his honking and erratic driving. He whipped in behind the black truck, hoping the woman blocking him would slow enough for him to get past. But she maintained her speed and kept watching him in her mirror.

Just then, her brake lights flashed. Behind her, horns blared, but Jessup didn’t hesitate. He whipped into the passing lane, but the Chevy beat him to it and pulled alongside the red Focus, the subcompact looking like a toy car next to it.

The truck’s brake lights flared and Jessup instinctively locked up his brakes. The nose of the Tundra pitched forward as the tires squealed in protest and everything on the seats flew forward.

“You motherfucker!” Jessup shouted as he hit the gas, but the Silverado had already shot ahead. It pulled alongside the car just as the next emergency lane came into view. When the red compact drew even with the turnoff, the big truck eased to the right, forcing it over. Then it jumped behind the Focus and accelerated, ramming into the little car, pushing it toward the barrier at the end of the breakdown lane. When the car tried to get back into traffic, the truck slammed into it, pushing it sideways. Smoke poured from the Ford’s tires. At the last minute, the truck jerked back to the left and the little car hit the barrier.

Jessup watched in horror as the red Ford Focus flipped over the guardrail and disappeared into the darkness.

He jammed on the brakes and the Tundra slid sideways to a stop, two feet from the guardrail. A second later, Jessup was at the concrete railing looking into a black abyss and kicking off his sneakers, oblivious to the sounds of screeching tires, crashing cars, and blaring horns.

He had a foot on the rail and was ready to go over when a strong pair of hands grabbed him and jerked him back.

“Get off me! I gotta get her!” he screamed as he fought to pull away.

“Someone help me!” said the cop. Two more sets of hands latched onto Jessup and they pulled him down as he kicked and cursed and screamed.

“Let me go. We have to help her! Get some divers out here!”

“It’s too late,” the officer said. “You can’t get to her, dude. The water’s sixty-five feet deep. The car’s gone.”

Jessup pressed his face into the concrete and moaned.

“That’s him, officer. He’s the one who pushed that car over the railing,” said a woman as she climbed out of a brown Jeep Cherokee. It was the one who had blocked Jessup in traffic.

“What?” Jessup said, still struggling to get free. “It wasn’t me. It was another black truck. I was trying to stop it.”

The woman, who wore a blue baseball cap and sunglasses, said, “He’s crazy. He was honking and flashing his lights. I thought he was going to ram me with that truck.
