Chapter 21

Olilra

Olilra was surrounded by smoke. The ground beneath her feet was cold and firm: stone. She wandered through the acrid fog trying to find the source of the fire, for what else could cause such thick black smoke? Hands outstretched, she stepped cautiously forward.

“Hello?” she cried out. “Can anyone hear me?” She didn’t know who else might be caught in the smoke or injured by the fire.

No one called back, but she pressed on, determined to find the source. Looking around, she tried to find a landmark, something she recognised so she could gauge where she was. Then the smoke thickened. A loud boom sounded and a red light flashed beside her. She turned to see what had made the sound but as she did it sounded again to her left. Turning again, this time she saw it: bright red flashes of lightning lit up the smoke then plunged her back into darkness. She realised then that the air was cold, not hot as she had expected in the shadow of a blaze.

Her hands found purchase on a surface in front of her. Damp rock revealed itself from the darkness. She followed it along with her hands, trying to find a way out. Her fingers grazed across a small hole. She recognised it immediately as the hole in the forbidden chasm, beneath the blood tree, where she believed the stone in her necklace had been mined from. As soon as she realised her necklace began to pulse. She reached up and pulled the pendant from her neck. The once orbicular stone flattened into a petal shape and grew ice cold. So cold that it burnt the skin on her hand. She cried out and dropped it to the floor.

Another crack of red lightning and a scream filled the thick air. She stood and spun to try and see who had made the sound but could not see more than her arm’s length in front of her.

“Olilra, help me!”

She knew the voice immediately. “Olive? Olive, where are you?”

“I’m here!”

The words echoed all around her as she ran into the darkness desperate to find her sister. “Olive!” she cried. “Olive!”

“I’m here,” again, her sister called out, but this time it sounded ever so slightly louder to her right. She ran in that direction, flailing her arms in front of her to avoid running into anything.

Another fork of lightning and another scream.

“Olive, hold on I’m coming!” Olilra called into the darkness. Another crack of lightning lit up the chasm and she caught the briefest glimpse of a shadowy figure no more than twenty paces ahead. She ran, her lungs burning. As she approached, the figure turned around.

“Olive!” Olilra cried in relief.

“Sister,” she breathed.

Another crack of lightning and this time it struck Olive and she screamed. Shaking and vibrating, her skin ashen and her veins glowing scarlet like the lightning. She fell to her knees, wailing.

“Sister, make it stop!” she begged.

Olilra knelt beside her and gripped her shoulders. She was freezing cold.
