Anna shook her head, “Sorry, Collin. Not now.” Learning that bees have five eyes and four wings, or that they do a waggle dance, wasn’t going to help her convince more people to care. Maybe Kaya and Reed were right. Maybe it was just too big a job.

Anna watered her three houseplants, Chloe, Fern, and Spike, and blew them a kiss good night. At least they’d be fine even if all the bees disappeared.

Anna loved Saturday mornings, because if she woke up early enough, her mom would let her come to the farmers’ market to buy fruits and vegetables for the restaurant. Just the two of them. It was one of the best times of the week. Anna loved seeing all the stalls bursting with different shapes and colors, red bell peppers, yellow squash, purple kale, and orange carrots. She’d been so busy thinking about bees, she almost forgot how much she loved the market.

As they walked from farmer to farmer, Anna and her mom passed a booth selling garlic scapes. “Hey! We just picked those at the Friendship Garden!”

Anna’s mother picked up a bunch and smelled them. “Mmm,” she said, “these would be great in a salad dressing.” She told the farmer to send a carton to her restaurant.

Next Anna and her mother went to a booth with all different kinds of lettuce. There were so many different shades of green, from light yellow-green to dark, dark blackish-green. It reminded Anna of a green rainbow. A greenbow, Anna thought, chuckling to herself. She loved naming things.

While her mother inspected different heads of lettuce, Anna let her eyes roam around the market. In addition to people selling fruits and vegetables, there were also cheesemakers, bakers, and people who made fancy jellies and jams. At the very edge of the market, Anna noticed a tiny booth she hadn’t seen there before.

Anna squinted her eyes to be sure she was seeing correctly. She was. The person at the booth was Mr. Blanco. A beekeeper at the farmers’ market? Of course! Honeybees and gardens went together.

“Mom,” she said, tugging her mother’s elbow. “There’s the beekeeper I was telling you about. Can we go see him?”

Her mother ripped off a tiny piece of watercress and took a bite. “I’ll take three bunches,” she told the farmer. Then she turned to Anna.
