CHAPTER SIX

EVIE HAD BEEN so sure tonight couldn’t possibly live up to their idealized memories...but it turned out it could. In fact, they’d just bundled up those memories of youthful innocence and tied them up in a great big bow of grown-up hot, hot, hot. She knew it the second his lips kissed her inner thigh.

Mark made a low sound and moved off of her, removing the condom that he’d thankfully remembered and she’d thankfully had nearby. He grabbed the colorful quilt at the foot of the bed and pulled it over them. His lips brushed her neck. She turned to face him, taking in his satisfied smile and the warmth glowing in his eyes. He knew they’d just blown their remembered trysts out of the water. His smile deepened. “Did we reach that high bar you were so worried about?”

She rolled her eyes. “Don’t spoil a good thing by asking me to stroke your ego.”

His eyes darkened. “Wasn’t my ego I was hoping you’d stroke...”

They took turns exploring each other, making each other groan and cry out and shudder in release, with snippets of sleep in between. They repeated the cycle until her alarm started to chirp on the nightstand in the dark.

She was opening the diner that morning, which meant she needed to get moving. If only her legless body would cooperate.

“That can’t be your alarm already. What time is it?” Mark grumbled into her shoulder. He stretched, tightening his arms around her. She soaked up his touch for one more precious minute, then sat up on the edge of the bed.

“It’s five in the morning, pal, and I need to get hustling.”

“The old Evie hated mornings.” Mark threw his arm over his eyes when she turned on the light.

Evie froze, watching the glow of last night’s lovemaking disappear into the harsh reality of a new day. She went into the bathroom, stepping into a steaming hot shower to banish any remaining fantasies. Last night was terrific, but she’d feared all along that Mark was in love with “the old Evie.” Not the new one. Not the real one. Not her. Which meant last night was a mistake. Not because Mark was in love with a woman from the past who no longer existed. But because she’d fallen in love with the man he was right now.

The man who’d coaxed her body into more orgasms than she’d thought possible. The man with a chest full of very nonaccountant-looking tattoos—dragons and mountains and flames and Celtic swirls of black that his parents would definitely not approve of. The man who’d dumped his corporate career to follow his high-school dreams, and found a way to be successful at it. The man who didn’t seem to be giving up on her now, even though he had in the past.

And that brought her right back around to the problem. Did she understand the pressure his grandfather had put on him? Of course. The old man had been a miserable human being. Did she believe 19-year-old Mark felt he had no choice but to leave her? Sure.
