Chapter 12
âPetty Officer, get down here. Over,â I ordered over the com-link.
âSay again, Staff Sergeant. Over,â Trip replied.
âI said, get down here,â I repeated. âI need your help. Van out.â
I didnât want an argument. After watching the video feed from Scout 1, which was still observing the Orrkasi at the armory remains, I had an idea. We were outnumbered, so, without any other place to go or many other options, I thought it might be a good idea to pull a trick from ancient Earth history. It was time to get medieval and show just how savage we could be, even if all it did was enrage the Orcs. Since they didnât seem all that keen to track us down, maybe my idea would help to give them a reason not to find us.
After setting Scout 2 to hover near the tree tops of the oasis performing a full three-hundred-and-sixty-degree scan of the area, I pulled out my Bowie knife and began to enact my plan, methodically beheading each slain Orc. The work was grisly and difficult, and when I finished, I was tired and covered with gore. Being near the oasis, I took the opportunity to step out of the heavy armorâs outer suit. The lightweight coverallâs dense synthetic fibers seemed nearly impenetrable, although I had no idea how they would fare against laser fire. Nor would the fabric save me from the bone-crushing force of a fired projectile. It would also likely be useless against the Orcsâ plasma weapons, which would stick to and burn through whatever they hit. Outside of those, the suit would keep me alive. It had other protective features as well: there were dozens of pockets on the coveralls, all lined with heat-resistant ceramic plates. They would, presumably, stop a laser blast, but I hoped I never had to find out. At this point, I was grateful for any protection I could get.
Using the water from the oasis, I scrubbed the blood from the suit and spread it across a rock to dry. The intersuit, which I still had on, along with the helmet, was almost like a second skin. I was just putting the outer suit back on when Trip arrived.
âWhat the hell?â he demanded when he saw my handiwork of severed heads.
âWe have a surprise for the Orrkasi,â I said.
âMy Godâ¦this is the most horrific thing Iâve ever seen.â
âTrust me, they would do worse to us,â I said. âI need your help moving them.â
âMoving them where?â Trip asked.
âBack to the old camp,â I said. âTheyâve probably already spotted it. Once they finish with the armory, theyâll go up to investigate.â
âAnd we should be nowhere near there when they do,â Trip pointed out. âWe canât risk it. Theyâll kill us for sure.â
âThey wonât stop looking for us,â I insisted. âNot unless we convince them itâs a bad idea.â
âYou killing all these isnât proof enough?â
âItâs exactly the type of proof we need, and all the better if we maximize the shock value. Now help me gather these up.
