CHAPTER TWELVE

Holly Summers, Grant County, Kentucky

With an angry surge of adrenaline pumping through her veins and the agony in her screaming leg to match it, Holly was guided up the stairs and forcefully pushed through the door to Clay’s trailer. The guard’s firm grip on her upper arms released, propelling her into the dimly lit confines where she spun with a scowl, tears of pain standing out in her eyes.

“Stay put,” Brandt said. “Don’t try anything funny. I’ll be right outside the door.”

The door slammed shut, leaving Holly standing alone in the stale air conditioning, settling cool on her sweaty abrasions, drying the stings. She crossed her arms, hugging herself, turning and taking a few steps inside to survey the lavish interior. A brown leather couch took up a good portion of the room, matched with a recliner, wrought iron end tables with dark wooden tops and exquisite lamps placed at the ends, the room illuminated by overheads and ambient lights on the far mantle, soft music playing in the background. It was so immaculate that she almost believed no one lived there, but it was Clay’s domain, and she had defied him again. Holly limped over to the kitchen counter, rested her hands on the edge, and leaned over the sink, turning on the water and splashing it on her face. She rubbed off the dirt, wincing at a bruise on her cheek, unsure of its origin. Grimacing, she clutched her right side where an ache started from the top of her ribs and ran to her belt line, her left leg plagued by a deep twitch where Harley’s crowbar had struck her.

“I need something to kill this pain,” she said with a suck of air.

Turning, wincing with every shift of balance, Holly walked slowly across the living room to a narrow hallway, taking the first right into a cramped but well-appointed bathroom, rummaging through the cabinets for a bottle of aspirin and throwing three in her mouth, washing them down with water from the sink cupped in her hand.

Wiping her mouth on the back of her sleeve, she momentarily stared at herself in the mirror, the deep green eyes gazing back at her looking desperate and pained, her hair disheveled and tangled, filled with pieces of dirt and leaves. She picked the pieces out and tossed them into the garbage can by the sink, then exited the bathroom, making her way back through the living room, grappling with the agonizing flare-ups in her body. She pulled open the freezer door, half expecting it to be empty or dripping with melting ice, but it was functioning perfectly, containing several ice packs nestled in a bed of frost. She took a large gel pack out, folded it in half, and placed it on her cheek, wincing and murmuring curses softly as she leaned against the counter.
