Mombasa, Kenya

The women in his native city of Mangalore rarely gave Aku Agarwal a second look. Even the low-caste girls from the poor areas across the Gurupura River averted their eyes when he would smile at them. He had long since given up any hope of finding a wife in his home town. On the other hand, he had high expectations of his visits to foreign cities, where the women considered him exotic. Aku liked to try new things, explore different cultures to his own and when he travelled, he considered the local women to be part of that experience.

This was his third or maybe fourth time visiting Mombasa and he had worked out the best way to meet girls. The first time he’d been in town, he’d stumbled around Mtwapa, a tourist strip of bars and clubs along the north shore. He’d met many girls there. But they had wanted money in exchange for sex. He didn’t like that. Paying for sex wasn’t sexy.

Some of the guys from the ship had encouraged him to use dating apps instead. By paying a small fee, he could set his location to the next port, so that by the time they arrived, he could already have dates arranged with local girls. It was a strategy that proved much more successful and now, when he landed on shore, he usually had three or four girls lined up. One for each night of his shore leave. If he got lucky even once, then he considered the trip a success as it gave him something to brag about to the guys back on board.

Sitting at a stool along the bar in the much more salubrious Nyali district of Mombasa, he opened his phone and checked the app for the fiftieth time that day. Estelle looked good in her photos. She was light-skinned with long straight black hair and although her nose was a little big for Aku’s taste, she had a good body, which more than compensated for it. Most guys would consider her a seven out of ten. The guys on board would be jealous. He stood up to smooth out his linen trousers and straighten his shirt. He thought he looked good. Hopefully, Estelle would too.

On the other side of the bar, sitting just adjacent to a crowd of British tourists on their fifth beer of the day, was a dark-skinned, long-haired man wearing a short-sleeved shirt and sunglasses. A casual observer would assume that he was sitting with his countrymen, but other than a couple of exchanged comments about the time and the location of the bathrooms, the man kept his own company. As Aku’s date arrived and took a seat next to him, the man casually glanced their way for half a second before returning his attention to the newspaper on the table in front of him.
