More subs, please
In the 1967â68 season, the rule was changed to allow substitutions for tactical reasons as well as for injury. In 1987â88, two substitutes were allowed, which rose to three in the 1990s. During the COVID pandemic in 2020, a temporary rule was introduced to allow the use of five substitutes.
Chapter 4
Part of the game
Somebody was missing at training the week after our match with North Bank.
âHas anybody seen Bengo?â Dan asked.
Everybody shrugged.
âWhat about you, Smithy?â Dan asked hopefully. âHave you heard from him?â
âNot a word,â I said.
I didnât tell him Iâd been messaging Bengo every day. He hadnât replied.
âWell, if you hear from him, let me know,â Dan said.
I nodded. I couldnât stop thinking about Bengo for the whole of the training session. How could somebody as good as he was give up like this? I needed to do something about it. While Dan was putting the balls away, I asked if anybody knew Bengoâs address.
âYes, he lives on Stone Street,â Sam said.
âWhat number?â I asked him.
Sam didnât know.
âBut you canât miss it,â Sam said. âItâs the second house as you turn off Broadway. Itâs got a red door.â
Ameer was banging his boots against the wall to get the mud off. âAre you going to see him?â he asked.
I nodded. âSomebody needs to talk to him,â I said.
So off I went. Samâs directions were spot on. I saw the house with the red door right away and knocked.
Bengo came to the door and frowned. âDid Dan send you?â he asked.
âNo,â I told him. âIt was all my idea. Iâve been messaging you.â
Bengo nodded. âYes, I saw the messages. Look, Iâm not sure I want to go on playing for the team.â
âYou canât just give up,â I said. âYouâre the best winger Iâve ever seen.â
Bengo stopped me. âIâm the best player youâve ever seen,â he said.
It was hard to argue.
âOK,â I said. âSo youâre the best player Iâve ever seen. You could get on the books of a professional team. Why throw it all away? Nobody wants to get injured, but itâs part of the game.â
