Chapter 13

Violet

“THIS IS INSANE!”

Violet glared at Robin, who apparently had enough of her red hair and was now a brunette with red undertones. “Would you keep your voice down?”

After she’d left to make way for Robin’s impromptu date with Patrick, it hadn’t been too hard to convince her to help… that didn’t mean she was nice about it.

“Or better yet, just don’t talk?” Lexie smirked at the fake brunette.

“Guys!” Mya chided all of them as the lights of the field gates illuminated the darkening forest. She bounced forward while the other three girls stayed a few paces behind. “Four tickets, please.”

The guy inside the booth on their side of the gate winked at her and handed over the tickets as she slid the money across the counter.

Robin gaped as Mya sauntered toward them, flashing the newly acquired tickets. “How did you do that?”

Shrugging, Mya matched their strides and they continued along the tree lined dirt road toward the gates. “Ever heard you catch more flies with honey?”

Robin wrinkled her nose, “Why would I want to catch flies?”

Lexie’s grin was sickly sweet. “She means you’ll get more in life by being sweet than by being a…”

“By being snarky,” Violet blurted, sending Lexie an exasperated look.

Her very human friend chuckled, seeming oblivious to the danger around them. Lexie had not been happy when she’d heard about the date, which didn’t make the situation between her and Robin any easier.

“Whatever.” Robin shoved her hands into her jacket pockets.

Worried she would leave if they kept fighting with her, Violet offered a warm smile. “Thank you again for helping us with this.”

Robin lifted her chin a little, but did give her a small smile in return.

“Tickets,” ordered a grumpy looking teen male as he held out one hand. The front legs of his chair were about five inches off the ground while he propped the backrest against the fence.

His attention remained focused on a gaming device in his other hand, even when Mya handed the tickets to him. He bit one corner of the four tickets, tore them, then handed them back.

Mya grimaced and was careful not to touch the part of the tickets the guy had bitten while Violet let out a relieved sigh. One more barrier passed.

“Thanks,” Mya muttered before the four girls shuffled past the distracted male.

“I can’t believe we made it in,” Robin’s eyes widened after they walked through the gates and a roar from the fans reached their ears.

The smaller dirt road expanded beyond the gate to a path big enough for two cars to carefully pass each other. Thick forest remained on either side as they walked the remaining length into the concessions area of the tourney pitch.

Due to the noise and the space needed for the field, the Sentinel pitch was located a little more than a mile from the base. Still within Sentinel territory, but outside the compound fence line.

Lexie’s excited giggle made Violet smile. “I can’t wait to see this.”

“I hate being late,” Robin murmured.

Arriving late had been Violet’s idea to minimize the number of people Lexie would be exposed to.
