âFor the wedding, weâll need strings of white lightsâfairy lightsâto illuminate the landscaping and trees around the pool,â Ivy said, tapping her fingers on the table in the library.
Poppy nodded, taking notes. âAny other types of lighting?â
âBetter coordinate with Shelly on that. Sheâs in charge of landscape and exterior, and she has more event experience than I do. Have you seen her this morning?â
âYoga class ran over, but I left early. I didnât stay for Savasana, the last asana.â When Ivy looked blank, Poppy added, âThe relaxing pose. Also called the corpse pose.â
âThatâs my favorite,â Ivy said. She lived for that flat-on-the-back pose at the end. Sometimes she even drifted to sleep.
Poppy smiled. âWell, Gilda can be chatty afterward.â
âSpeaking of Gilda, letâs get some chew toys for Pixie,â Ivy said. âMaybe the poor pup is just bored.â
âWhy?â
Ivy hadnât told Poppy about the jewels she and Shelly had just found, though she trusted her niece. âWeâve found something,â she began, but before she could continue, the front door chimes rang.
Poppy hurried to answer the door. When she returned, her eyes sparkled with curiosity.
âChief Clarkson is here for you,â Poppy said, standing at the entry to the library.
âCome in. And close the door, Poppy. But you should stay.â Ivy held her hand out to the chief. âIâm glad you could come so quickly.â When he shook her hand, her fingers nearly disappeared in his beefy hand.
âBennett mentioned youâve uncovered another one of the Ericksonâs secret stashes,â he said, his deep voice filling the library.
âThis one is different.â Ivy reached for her phone to share photos of the jewelry that she and Shelly had taken last night. âIâll email these to you.â
The chief studied the photos. âThese items are here?â
âIn my room.â
Poppy watched the exchange with wide eyes, straining to see the images on the phone.
The chief squinted at the hallmark photos. âAre they secure?â
âI think so.â Rolled up in towels. Ivy bit her lip. Sheâd have to do better than that. Sheâd check with her bank about a safety deposit box.
âSince these items might be related to the paintings, Iâll pass this on to Ari at the FBI,â Chief Clarkson said. âHe might wish to visit again.â
Ivy nodded. She hoped he would come before the wedding. Their client wanted everything to be perfect, and so did Ivy and Shelly. This was their first event, and Caroline Jefferson knew an awful lot of VIPs.
âWould you like to see the pieces?â Ivy asked.
âIâll need to for the report,â the chief replied.
As they left the library, they ran into Gilda, who was meandering through the hallway. âHi, Chief. What brings you here today? Anything wrong?â
Ivy knew they should have taken the rear staircase. Her heart sank. Within the hour, Gilda and the Java Beach crowd would be speculating on what the chief of police was doing at Seabreeze Inn. And that would give Darla more ammunition for her lawsuit.
âJust paying a friendly visit,â he said.
âWe like to make sure our guests are safe,â Ivy said, fumbling for an answer.
