Katherine of Aragon

Margaret often thinks of her sister-in-law as “Katherine of Arrogant,” a play on words that doesn’t seem apt. As a narrator, Margaret isn’t always capable of reading Katherine’s behavior correctly, particularly when they are children. For instance, Margaret describes acts of warmth and kindness, such as Katherine’s attempts to cheer five-year-old Mary, as inappropriate and intrusive.

She also sees Katherine as hypocritical and fickle when the opposite is true; Katherine is the most consistent member of her family. She’s singularly obsessed with her marriage to Henry VIII, the preservation of which drives all of her decisions. Ostensible displays of cruelty, such as when she orders the murder of Margaret’s husband and gloats over his death, can be traced to what Katherine feels to be her obligations as a wife, not a desire to bring her sister-in-law low. She’s not driven by spite.

Exactly why Katherine puts her marriage above all else isn’t entirely clear, though it’s at least partly in service of her home country; in any case, it’s not for personal gain. Unlike Margaret, Katherine steadfastly sticks to her principles even if it results in personal discomfort.
