“I’m glad we decided to do this,” I say as the waiter clears our plates. “I miss all the great restaurants here.”

My meeting with James got pushed to five so we decided to go to a restaurant and discuss things over dinner. It was my idea. I don’t mind being in the office, but I wanted to go out tonight. Being back here, I’m appreciating the city and all there is to do here, in a way I never have before. I can’t believe I used to hide in my apartment every night and never go out. If I lived here now, I’d be out all the time.

James chuckles. “You’ve mentioned that several times tonight. All the things you miss about the city. Have you considered moving back?”

“I can’t. Ethan and I have a house now, and he loves it there. He loves the town and our neighborhood. He’s already made several friends and they were able to get him accepted for membership at the country club. Soon I’ll officially be a golf widow.” I laugh, but it actually makes me sad. I didn’t want Ethan joining the country club. I worried he’d spend his weekends there instead of with me, and sure enough, that’s what’s happening. He’s already reserved tee times for both Saturday and Sunday, which means I’ll be stuck at home, caring for Rose.

“But what about you?” James asks. “Are you happy there?”

I shrug. “I’m sure I will be after I’ve been there longer. Being there is a huge change after living in the city my whole life. It’s taking time to adjust.”

He nods. “I get that.”

I pick up my glass of wine and finish what’s left of it. I ordered a bottle and drank almost all of it. James just had a glass. It was an excellent wine. I splurged on a very expensive bottle. Since this was a work meeting, I’m charging the meal to Adore. Ethan will never see the bill, not that I care if he did. There’s nothing wrong with me going out for dinner or letting it drag out for two hours. Why should I have to rush home to care for Rose? Ethan can do it. He needs to be helping out more instead of making me do everything.

“You okay?” James asks.

“Yes.” I smile at him. “Why do you ask?”

“Your face. You looked angry all of a sudden. Was it something I said?”

“No. It has nothing to do with you. It’s the situation at home. I’m feeling overwhelmed having to care for my mother-in-law. But that’s none of your concern. I shouldn’t even be talking about it.”

“You can if you want.” He smiles. “I’m a good listener.”

James is a very nice man. I’ve always liked him. I hired him after only one interview, impressed with his knowledge of the ad industry and his drive and dedication to his career. He was married in his twenties, but it didn’t work out. Now he’s almost forty and not seeing anyone as far as I know.
