I knocked on the door to Magnus’s temporary apartment with one hand, and balanced two coffee cups in a holder, with a bag of fresh pastries in the other.

Being raised by TOM meant a steady diet of protein, fiber, and carefully monitored carbohydrates. The diet of a body honed to be a weapon, rather than that of a teenager with an overactive metabolism who wanted to try everything.

Dahlia never passed up sugary and sweet these days, and I hoped the breakfast would make her more receptive to finding a common ground with Frey.

Magnus opened the door, stepped aside, and grabbed one of the coffees as I walked past. “She says to tell you she’s still not speaking to him.”

“I figured as much.” I re-balanced the tray to adjust for the change in weight.

“Oh, Vi… God. This coffee is amazing.” Magnus’s groan from behind me bordered on orgasmic. “Did you—”

“Stop in Venice before I came over? Yes.” I moved the pastries out of her grasp before she could grab them from behind. “Dahlia gets first choice.”

Magnus huffed and strolled past me to perch on the arm of the couch. “Which god do I have to argue with to get chocolate croissants hand delivered to me?”

“A different one than you’ve already pissed off. There are enough for both of you.”

“Get your ass out here,” Magnus yelled.

I could be irritated with the behavior, but it was refreshing to be in the company of people who were comfortable with each other.

Dahlia wandered into the living room, damp hair hanging in dark curtains around her face, and her heavy eyeliner not completely hiding the circles under her eyes. “Morning.” She gave me a tired smile.

“Morning.” I handed her the pastry bag.

She shook her head and pushed it away. “Not hungry.”

Magnus sigh-growled.

I extracted the largest croissant from the bag and held it close enough for her to get a whiff. The sweet was still warm. “Just a taste.”

“Fine.” She leaned in and took a bite, chewed, and swallowed. “Maybe I’m a little hungry.” She took the pastry from me.

Magnus grabbed the bag from me, and I handed Dahlia her coffee.

“Thank you.” Dahlia managed a tiny smile between devouring the food and washing it down.

Good first step. I opened my mouth.

“I’m still not talking to him.” She spoke before I could.

I’d suspected this would take time. I could exercise a little patience. “Just think about it.”

“I thought about it. Nope.” Dahlia took a long swallow of coffee.

“He’s going to let you dance,” I said.

She raised her brows. “You mean he was actually honest about something?”

My patience cracked at the thinly veiled insult. “I won’t do this with you. You can be mad at Frey, that’s your right, but don’t speak ill of him. I won’t let him do so to you, either.”

“Did he try?” Uncertainty slipped into her question.

“No. He wants to make things right.” I softened my tone again. “You’re going to have to work with him to refine your dance.”

“Pretty sure she can choreograph a simple stage show on her own,” Magnus said.
