I stomped up the stairs leading to the apartment, and slammed the door closed. My anger was still flowing, and I needed a way to release my fury and adrenalin. I threw my purse on the floor and headed into the bathroom. I needed to scream again, but that’s all I’d done all the way back to Ken’s place after I’d left the restaurant.

There were a few things that kept flooding through my head, and every single one of them ticked me off.

First was how Ken had practically demanded Chad and I fake a relationship. Second, how quickly Chad had accepted it. Finally, how Julia had been shooting daggers at me with her glare. Julia was a minor concern, but damned if it didn’t irritate me the way she thought of me as an interference between her and Chad.

I had no idea how Chad felt about her aside from him apologizing for Julia’s behavior the previous night, but I had a suspicion that it was one-sided feelings from her to Chad.

Either way, I just didn’t like the girl. Setting Julia aside, I focused my anger on Chad and my brother.

I could empathize with Ken’s reasoning, but he was over-reacting, and overstepping in asking—more like demanding—for Chad and I to do this. I’d argued with him for another ten minutes in the storage room before I’d given up. Ken was extremely stubborn, and I’d known it was a losing battle, so I cowered and licked my wounds.

Chad, on the other hand, had been too easily persuaded into giving into Ken, and his comment about “no funny business” struck me odd, but it was his smirk that really irked me. He reminded me of someone who was harboring a secret, and eventually I’d find out what it was, but only on his schedule.

I didn’t sleep as well as I’d thought I had last night, or perhaps it was the high-strung rush of what had happened after I woke up that had me feeling exhausted. Either way, all I wanted was to take a shower then slip into bed.

I hoped a short nap would help me feel better and make my head stop hurting as if I’d been awake all night.

Turning the shower faucet on, I waited for the water to warm up, then I slipped out of my clothes, leaving them in a pile on the tiled bathroom floor. Stepping under the warm water, I felt as if the stress of the last twelve hours was beginning to wear off.

As the water sluiced over my body and sprayed my head, I just stood in the shower with my hands braced on the tiled wall, and let my body attempt to recover from the restless sleep, the ache in my lower back from the cot’s thin mattress, and the idea of being in a relationship with Chad.

Chad.

“Ugh.” I closed my eyes, remembering how I’d felt when I’d glanced over and seen him sleeping beside me.

Sure, I’d been confused, maybe even a little shocked, but I had been mostly giddy inside.
