Chapter Forty-One

Much like the scene at the West Hollywood Precinct a day before, Vera Cho is waiting as Ember and Kaia pull up. Leaning against the side of her car, her gaze is fixed on her phone in one hand. With the other, she twirls an unlit cigarette, the white paper flashing against black nail polish.

The second time in as many meetings, it goes past merely being a habit or even a nervous tic.

More likely, something Hell has taken away from her. A constant reminder, dangled just beyond reach. The equivalent of chocolate custard to Ember, though instead of keeping it far removed, Vera chooses to hold one tight at all times.

A move that could very well explain some of the latent hostility she carries.

The remainder, Ember suspects, being a part of her personality that was there long before making any deals with the underworld.

“What the hell took you so long?” Vera snaps. Focus aimed downward, she waits until Ember is out of the car and just a couple of feet away before looking up. “It’s four in the damn morning. It’s not like there’s traffic.”

“Yeah, well, we weren’t all laying at home in bed when the call came in,” Ember fires back. “Some of us have to work for a living.”

Vera’s immediate response is a snort. An emphatic gesture that rocks her head back, one nostril rising.

“All evidence to the contrary.”

Still carrying vivid images from the interior of Stu Tuttle’s home, Ember is not in the mood. Coupled with her head finally being clear of whatever was injected into her, she would love nothing more than to fly across the short gap between them. A flurry of fists and knees and elbows, not relenting until all the animosity she carries is released.

An act that, as far as she can tell, is well within the rules.

Her contract precludes her from harming a living being, but it says nothing about her coworkers.

Entertaining the thought for a moment, Ember eventually manages to pull her attention toward the building before them. An ugly concrete structure rising several stories into the air, surrounded by a pair of congruent fences lined with razor wire.

On each corner sits a guard tower, sharpshooters no doubt posted up, watching their every movement. People that would likely get quite a kick out of watching the two of them fall to blows in the parking lot, letting it play out until a clear winner emerged before leading them both right inside.

A short trip for all parties involved.

“What happened?” Ember asks.

“Your partner fill you in?” Vera replies, dropping her phone into the bag looped across her forearm. Turning toward the front entrance, she takes off at a pace just shy of a jog.

A gait much quicker than someone her height, balanced on three-inch heels, should be able to maintain.

“Some,” Ember replies. “Wasn’t much there.”

“Not much is all we have,” Vera replies, the last words spoken as they head for the glass doors spread wide across the front entrance. Three separate sets delineated by single rows of concrete block.
