“They’re starting work on the bridge today,” Georgia said, looking up from where she’d been studying her phone, which remained in its prime reception position on the kitchen counter.

“That’s good news, isn’t it?” Sawyer asked as he helped himself to another slice of toast and liberally covered it with honey.

“Yes, it is,” she said with a forced cheerfulness.

It was good news, but it did mean that this idyll would have to end soon. Sure, she’d known all along it couldn’t last forever, but it was kind of nice to be unplugged from the world and all its dramas, especially her own. A continual string of texts had come in from her mother over the past couple of weeks, together with several from Cliff, as well. Georgia had sent her mom brief reassurances that she was fine and that Sawyer was not a danger to her despite her mom’s fears to the contrary, and had ignored Cliff completely. But she knew that eventually she’d have to face the music and make some adult decisions about her future. In the short-term, she might have to stay a few nights with her mom. But she didn’t have to decide anything right now, she reminded herself.

“What’s on the agenda for today?” Sawyer asked.

“I dunno. I haven’t planned anything.”

He stopped mid-chew and looked at her in concern. “Who are you and what have you done with Georgia?” he asked in a tone laden with mock horror.

She cracked a reluctant smile. She hadn’t made plans for today because, for once, she thought it might be fun to play it by ear and let Sawyer take the lead. So far they’d hiked every nearby trail several times. She’d noticed he’d begun to take more and more photos and spent time each evening transferring them to his laptop and editing them. She’d been astonished at the time he’d put into it and the single-minded focus he displayed while he was working. And he hadn’t been Mr. Grumpy-pants once in the past few days.

Maybe that had been because they’d both been enjoying their sexual encounters. She’d heard somewhere that people were generally happier and more relaxed when they had sex frequently. She’d never really considered herself a sexual being but lately, she felt as if she was primed for action all the time. Even now, watching him crack one of those silly grins at her while he finished his breakfast, her entire body went on high alert. Her veins pulsing with life and energy and the rest of her body aching to pulse with a whole lot more.

And he hadn’t once said anything about her shape or size. It puzzled her in some respects. Her size was something she’d accepted long ago, but it often felt as if others had more difficulty in accepting that she was happy the way she was. Many pushed her to make small changes here and there. Nothing too overt that might be offensive, but the subtle things, like buying her a fruit basket instead of candy at Valentine’s Day and saying it was healthier or better for her.
