Katie

The morning light filtered through my eyelids. While I was warm, bundled in blankets, my nose was chilly. I forced one eyelid open. We’d slept near the fire, and it had gone to glowing red and yellow coals. The smell of fresh coffee and something sweet cooking caught my attention enough to open both eyes. I sat up and shivered in the chilly air. Damien was in the kitchen.

He glanced at me. "Hold on, stay in the blankets. There’s still no power. I’ll put a few more logs on."

Since I was naked and my clothes were nowhere nearby, I wrapped up, then shuffled to the couch and hopped onto it.

Last night's events played back in my mind. The game, the unexpected tenderness from Damien, and the way his touch had set my skin aflame.

Now he wore a simple black t-shirt that clung to his muscular frame, which made watching him put the logs on the fire a treat as well. The loose gray sweatpants were a treat, too. Why did men look so dang good in sweats? His hair was tousled. A huge change from the expensive suits he normally wore. But I’d never really been alone before with him either.

Once the fire was blazing, he settled next to me on the couch and kissed me thoroughly. "Want some coffee?"

I blinked in surprise. This was definitely not the gruff, imposing boss I was used to at work.

"Yes, please."

"I brought clothes down for you, but don’t feel you have to put them on," he said, gesturing to the armchair holding a handful of clothing. He smiled cheekily. "I don’t mind if you stay naked all day."

He walked back to the kitchen and poured me a cup of coffee. The rich, inviting scent drew my blanket-clad self to the table. I added cream and sugar, and took a sip, letting the warmth spread through my chest. I winced as I sat down again. Both my rear and other bits were rather sore.

"Here you go." He slid a plate of toast and eggs in front of me. Those piercing blue eyes held so much warmth. Was this a Damien-doppelgänger?

As I munched on my breakfast, I studied him. He moved with a quiet grace that I had never noticed before, and his gaze seemed tender whenever it landed on me. I’d woken up in some sort of parallel universe where Damien Santini, scary boss extraordinaire had been replaced by a kinder, caring man whose attention warmed me even in the frigid house.

I glanced out the window at the snow, then checked my phone. No texts, but…I’d have thought Connor would let me know Max was ok. It had only been a day, and Max’s flare-ups weren’t usually serious, but they did make it harder for him to get around. He’d be safe with Connor. There was nothing I could do right now and worrying helped nothing.

I didn’t text Max during hospital stays if I could avoid it. He was a light sleeper, and he got angry with himself for being sick.
