Chapter Five
He did as promised, dropping Caroline off at work first thing in the morning. As soon as sheâd fallen asleep in the next room, he left the cabin, shifted, and ran for miles. He had a lot of pent-up energy to burn off. The entire day had been a whirlwind for his emotions. Issues with his pack, finding his mate, and returning to the cabin heâd been avoiding for almost a lifetime.
It was time to move forward, regardless of how difficult. Denying himself happiness and hiding from life was so deeply engrained into who he was. He worked days and lived the rest of his time as close to feral as he could. His wolven form mercifully dulled his emotions. But he was a werewolf, and needed to embrace his other half.
When his parents had been killed, his entire world crashed down around him. He was young, inexperienced, and forced to survive with the little training his parents had given him. It had been easier to live in his fur. He could hunt, blend into his surroundings, and survive the cold winter months. When he returned to his human skin, the rush of loneliness crippled him. It wasnât until he began forming a pack that things improved in his life.
Jacob had gotten him a job at the local mine, and Rhaina and Zeke taught him human customs. Even back in his twenties, he didnât know how to read or write. Heâd come a long way since those days.
Now his life had reached a new level, one far beyond survival mode. Caroline changed everything.
âWhere the fuck have you been?â asked Zeke.
He crashed down on the den floor, stretching out his body. âYouâre not my keeper,â he said.
âYou always sleep in the den. Did you actually stay at the cabin?â
They all knew what the cabin signified, but he wasnât in the mood for another trip down memory lane. The pity in Zekeâs voice made his skin crawl. He darted out of the den and shifted into his human form.
Rhaina appeared from the forest, casually walking toward him.
âI see youâre in one piece,â he said. âMaybe next time listen when I tell you something. You never should have gotten that fucking close to the campsites.â
She frowned.
âLeave her alone,â said Zeke, joining them in the small clearing. âSheâs been through enough the past couple nights.â
He wanted to ask about Carolineâs involvement but he was afraid of the answer.
âWhereâs the human female?â she asked. âDid you kill her?â
âNo, I never touched her.â
Rhaina scoffed. âI can smell her all over you. You donât lie very well.â
He didnât want to deal with his personal life right now. It wasnât his packâs business anyway. âWho captured you?â
âThe new park recruit. He actually tried to feed me poisoned hamburger.â
âAnyone else involved?â
She smirked. âHe had a partner in crime. Seems your little blue-eyed human wanted me dead just as much as him. Maybe more.â
He grit his teeth, then took a cleansing breath before speaking. âHow do you know that?â
âI was in my fur, not dead.
