Virgil walked back up toward Getz’s house, looked at Grady and said, “I understand your position, Jack, I really do—”

Grady looked at Murton and said, “Here comes the ‘but.’”

Virgil held out his hands, palms forward. “There is no but, Jack.” Then, like a dope: “But, I’m wondering if maybe a little diplomacy wouldn’t serve everyone’s interest in the long run.”

“How exactly would that work?” Grady said.

“I’m speaking hypothetically here, okay?”

“I’m listening.”

“The man was defending himself. Was there forethought? Maybe. But that forethought doesn’t rise to the level of premeditation. If an individual in the same situation as Mr. Getz were to amend his statement, could we chalk the whole thing up to a homeowner defending himself during a robbery gone bad?”

“What sort of amendment are we talking about?” Grady said.

“Well, hypothetically speaking, how about admitting to ownership of the shotgun as a means to let the bad guys take themselves off the map.”

“Why does everything have to be so complicated with you, Jonesy?”

“What’s complicated? The guy made a dumb choice. He could say he was in shock while being questioned, or his hearing was still off, or anything along those lines. A jury would take one look at him and think, ‘Grandpa,’ and the whole thing would get tossed before the judge’s coffee got cold. What do you say?”

Grady sighed and said, “Bring him over.”

“I can, and I will,” Virgil said. “But I gotta hear you say the words, Jack.”

“Yeah, yeah, if he amends his statement, he’s off the hook. I wouldn’t be offended if he managed to work in an apology as well.”

Virgil went and got Getz, gave him the particulars, then they headed over to talk to Grady. Along the way Virgil said, “Stick to the facts, use as few words as possible, and apologize. You might want to start with the apology.”

Getz looked at Virgil and said, “You ever notice how sensitive everyone is these days?”
