CHAPTER 15
âA tunnel?â Maryam and Roz are sitting on the veranda again, and Maryam bites her lip: she said it too loudly.
Roz laughs softly. âItâs fine. I turned on the airscaping before we came out; I donât think anyone can hear us. That was my reaction, too.â
âAnd it was full of comms cables?â
âPacked with them,â Roz says. âWell ⦠lined with themâthey left space in the middle for personal transport. An escape pod, maybe.â
âBut why so many cables, when the tunnel only goes between two fixed points?â
âIt depends, in part, on where point B is,â Roz says. Djukic is working on that. âBut I think ⦠I suspect Heritage was selling channels.â
âSelling channels to whom?â
âTo other governments. Weâve only worked our way through a few of the data streams so far, but it looks like theyâre all encrypted under different systems.â
âYou mean other micro-democratic governments?â Maryam asks, sitting up. âThey were paying Heritage to transmit data behind our back?â
Roz sighs. Her reaction, two days ago when the idea was first floated, was much the same. Now she wonders how it could be surprising for anyone in their line of work. âPeople are constantly trying to get around Information. Thereâs this addictive fetishization of privacy, even when itâs not for any particular purpose.â
âThat may be,â Maryam says, taking a bite of candied kumquat. âBut if youâre right, weâre not talking about chisme or petty private scandals. These are governments digging a secret tunnel through the mantle of the Earth to keep peopleânot just Information, the constituents they supposedly work forâfrom knowing what theyâre doing.â
Roz nods agreement. âWeâre considering the possibility that this may not be governments but the individual corporations within Heritageâs coalition. Corporations have secrets too.â
âVery true,â Maryam agrees, taking a piece of papaya this time. âElection time makes it seem like everythingâs about governments, but that might make more sense than Heritage cooperating with other governments, even for money.â
âOf course, if they were talking to a null state without our knowledgeâ¦â
âScary,â Maryam agrees. âSo thereâs still the possibility this could be Exformation.â
âYes, but ⦠I keep coming back to the question of why so many cables. You would think they would only need one.â
âWhen I started researching these weird tourist guides,â Maryam says, âI was baffled by the idea of data not available on Information. But now ⦠thereâs so much out there, so much we miss.â
Thereâs a long-enough pause that Maryam thinks Roz isnât going to answer. When she does start to speak itâs slowly, as if thinking it through as she talks. âI started to see that in Darfur. The edges, the gaps in coverage. And then there are the null states, and the places near them. And then thereâs everything people try to hide from us, successfully or not. And the things we donât see at all, because we donât think theyâre important or we donât know what to look for.â Maryam realizes that Rozâs measured tone is that of someone guiding a friend through an
