The telescope William Herschel used to discover the planet Uranus

What looks like plain, white light to our eyes is made up of many different colors mixed together. Prisms separate light into its component colors. This is called a spectrum. A rainbow is an example of a spectrum. Raindrops act as prisms to separate sunlight into its component colors. Different materials give off, absorb, or reflect different colors of light. Materials also absorb or give off light differently at different temperatures. By studying spectra, scientists can learn what stars are made of.
