CHAPTER 20

Hospital

Katy hurriedly made it into a restroom stall and dropped to her knees in front of the commode. She hadn’t felt this sick since she was hit with a stomach bug some years back, which came on just as sudden, and was just as gut wrenching, literally. Back then she had spent most of a night on the cool tile floor of her bathroom. She never wanted to be that sick again.

“Don’t lock it in case we need to get to you. I’ll keep the door shut for your privacy.” Donna gathered wet paper towels to put on Katy’s forehead and the back of her neck.

After a very short time Dr. Jim came into the restroom, and his wife cleared it of any others not connected with Katy. He carried his medical bag that was always in his truck.

Right away he asked questions.

“Katy, do you think you can make it out here to the chair? Are you done in the stall?”

“Maybe. It might come again, though.” She sounded like a weak, scared child.

“I understand you said your stomach has been hurting since lunchtime? What did you have to eat?”

She came out of the stall, slowly walked to the chair, a little hunched over, and hugging her middle. “Protein shake, carrots, hummus.”

“Had everything been refrigerated?”

“In my portable cooler.”

“You’ve eaten that before?”

“All the time.”

“Just vomiting? Or diarrhea also?”

She might normally be a little embarrassed, but she knew him to be a compassionate man. He had kids and grandkids and loved his family’s horses and dogs. Plus, she felt so horrible right now she didn’t care. She just wanted relief. She looked at Dr. Jim’s ruffled gray hair and thought of her dad whom she missed terribly.

“Just throwing up.”

He pulled out a thermometer to get her temperature and also felt her head and hands.

“You’re a little clammy.”

She mumbled. “Yeah. I get hot and cold.”

After less than a minute, he read the digital thermometer. “A little high. Not too bad.”

He watched her. “So, no diarrhea?”

“No.”

“At first, I might say food poisoning. A person usually gets that from spoiled food. But most often they have diarrhea as well as vomiting. I think you should go to the ER so they can check you out thoroughly. I can make a call to let them know we’re on our way.” He put his medical paraphernalia away and started to pick up the leather bag.

“Maybe it’s the flu?” Donna asked.

“No, I don’t think so. There would be different symptoms.” The doc shook his head.

Katy’s complexion took on a paleness that was obvious to anyone as being abnormal. In a weak voice, she tried to protest. “I can’t leave the show…my horse.”

Dr. Jim was firm but kind. “The hospital is close by. It’ll be quick. I’ll go with you. They’ll run a test, probably give you fluids if you’re dehydrated. Then we’ll know for sure what it is. Plus, I’m sure you’ll feel better afterward. You can probably come back to the show. I’m not positive, but I am optimistic.
