It only took them a couple of hours to assemble enough willing rebels for the diversion and then create a plan as to how they would go ahead. Soon enough, Charlie found herself jotting down the last details on her chalk drawing with Caden standing guard at the end of the hallway.

‘It looks as if it’s about to come out of the wall this instant,’ Vanilla gasped, stepping back with her own chalk in hand, admiring Charlie’s drawn nymph now disrupting an otherwise spotless wall. Wistful smiles were exchanged between the girls. Charlie had wanted Maddison to help her – if only to hear what she thought of her plan – but Maddison had refused to get up this morning after another troubled night.

‘Yeah, well hopefully any Agnus passing this way would be too busy trying to wash the graffiti away to continue down the corridor,’ Charlie said, giving Vanilla’s drawing of vines and flowers an approving look.

‘Trust girls to make defiance look pretty,’ Caden said, surprising her at first with his cordiality until he drawled, ‘and take forever.’

Rolling her eyes, Charlie said her goodbyes to Vanilla and followed him down the hallway.

A loud commotion sounded from the first floor.

‘So, it begins,’ she said under her breath.

Caden turned around and pulled her along. ‘And their sacrifice will be a waste if we’re not successful. Let’s hurry.’

Picking the lock with more efficiency than she would have expected, they soon stumbled into the gloomy light of Mother Ratchford’s office. Waiting for her eyes to adjust, Charlie headed over to the windows and pulled back the curtains. As she suspected, the headmistress had a panoramic view of the grounds, but, to her relief, it would require quite a hawk’s eye to see the path to Mythos or what happened around the beach.

Like Deimos’, the office was sparsely decorated with only a few shelves, paper archives, and a large desk standing in the middle of the room.

‘What’s that stink?’ muttered Caden just as it hit Charlie too, a scent of rot and iron. A large shiny item occupied one of the shelves amongst black leather books, looking like a pair of torn off wings from a giant butterfly. Dried coagulated blood and sinew were still attached to the bone. Albin’s wings presented like a trophy. Nausea hit her with a blow. She did not even want to imagine Mother Ratchford observing them with pride late at night. The large golden crucifix on the wall seemed like a joke.

She held her breath and listened for any sound at the door, the mere thought of the headmistress making Charlie feel her presence in the room. But the hallway was silent.

‘Let’s search this place and get out of here,’ Caden whispered. Hurrying towards the desk, he pulled open the drawers and rummaged through their contents. There was a slingshot, a pan flute, and other odd items she supposed had been confiscated at one point or another. Some letters filled another drawer. One of them carried a coat of arms: two broken wands above the letters HG.
