The rumours reached me before Sophie got home. At least three people rang me to tell me what had happened at Amir’s registry office wedding. My brain felt numb with anger and distress. I was ready to give my complete self to her, but maybe I was delusional. While I had been secretly fine-tuning my dance routine over the last week, she had been doing scheming of a very different sort.

I couldn’t sit down as I waited for her. How dare she play with my feelings and my reputation like that? My heart was vibrating from my chest to my throat, and I could feel the vein in my forehead throbbing. It crossed my mind to go next door and borrow the neighbour’s blood pressure machine to check I wasn’t going to have a stroke.

I was still pacing around the flat when she walked in. I faced her, fists on my hips, ready to shout, tell her off, take control, but it all vanished, poof, when she ran into my arms and broke down. There’s nothing like a woman weeping into your chest, to make you feel both tender and manly at the same time, and I melted completely.
