CHAPTER 10

Tim took in the view of the Martin Luther King Academy football stadium as the Hilton Prep players stretched. The stands were almost full and it was still fifteen minutes to kickoff.

“Man, the crowd’s really psyched for a JV game,” he whispered to Cody. “I can’t even imagine how excited they must get about the varsity games.”

“Remember, most of them are here to cheer for the other guys,” Cody said. “I told you they’d be a tough team to beat.”

Tim quickly found out that Cody was right. The King Crusaders defense didn’t wait until the second half to double-team Tim. From the very first play, a defensive back was up on the line of scrimmage.

Back in the huddle, Cody looked around the circle. “Okay, let’s try one of the new plays,” he said. “Flanker right in motion, square in. On two.”

Tim lined up in the backfield. “Ready… set…” As soon as Cody started his signals, Tim jogged out to the right.

On the count of two, the center hiked the ball to Cody, and Tim bolted upfield, slipping by the first King defender. He raced ten yards and then broke sharply toward an open space in the center of the field. Cody’s pass hit him right in the hands.

“First down!” the referee called as he signaled with his outstretched arm.

“Let’s keep it going,” Cody said back in the huddle. “Flanker in motion right, deep curl in. On two.”

Again Tim slipped by the first defender and sprinted upfield. The second King defensive back was backpedaling as fast as he could, thinking Tim was going long. Instead Tim dug his right foot into the turf and curled into the center of the field.

Cody’s pass was on the money again. Tim turned and dodged a flying tackler. He juked by the King safety and was off to the races. No one was going to catch him.

Touchdown! Hilton led 7–0.

But the Crusaders came back, grinding out yardage on the ground. Even Calvin’s fierce tackles couldn’t stop them. The long King drive ended with a short plunge that tied the score, 7–7.

The game turned into a shootout with the teams trading scores and neither defense able to stop the other team’s offense. In the fourth quarter, Hilton led 21–20, their lead coming on a blocked point-after touchdown by Calvin.

But there was no stopping the Crusaders. In the fourth quarter they drove the length of the field and scored again. The Hilton defense stiffened to stop an attempt at a two-point conversion. King led 26–21.

Coach Flores gathered the Hilton offense at the sidelines. “There are only three and a half minutes left,” he said, shaking his right fist. “Keep playing hard! We’ve got to score on this drive. If we punt we probably won’t get the ball back. Let’s make something happen out there.”

With Cody quickly calling out plays, the Hilton offense started to move down the field.

A pass to Conrad Nowak, the Vikings tight end…

A down and out to Tim…

And a couple of runs by T.
