Chapter Seven
A Deadly New Yearâs Resolution (1992)
What is amazing about this story is how little public attention it got. That does not mean the crime was not horrific; it just wasnât noteworthy for the media. No one should die as Missy did.
DECEMBER 29-30, 1992. Missy McLauchlin, twenty-five, had a history of drug problems. She had moved from Wixom, Michigan, to North Charleston, South Carolina, where she was living with her fianceâs family.
On the night she was murdered, she got into an argument with her fiance, John Owen, at a nightclub. Angry and drunk, she marched out of the club and began to weave her way home on foot. Police spotted her and gave her a ride. But after the officers left, she set out on foot to walk to another club.
Three black men, Matthew Mack, Matthew Williams and Joseph Gardner, pulled up alongside in a car and started a conversation with the woman. They offered her drugs if she would come back to their trailer and have sex with them. Missy, impaired and angry, accepted their offer.
The three men had spent most of the day drinking and watching pornographic interracial videos with their girlfriends. At one point, Mack got angry at his white girlfriend and shouted that he wanted to âstab her,â but that âany white would do.â Williams chimed in, saying he wanted âto fâa white woman.â
Two hours later, the group watched a television news account of the biggest news stories of 1992. When the videotaped beating and arrest of Rodney King appeared on the air, the third man, Gardner, said that blacks âhad endured four hundred years of oppression.â He made a New Yearâs resolution to âkill a white bitch.â
Later that night they went out for a drive and picked up Missy. They brought her back to the trailer where they lived. Even though they offered Missy no drugs, she willingly had sex with themâat first. She started to resist when they tried to sodomize her. They held her down and took turns raping her.
During this time, Edna Williams and Indira Simmons, the girlfriends of Mack and Williams, were in the den of the trailer, watching television. They did nothing to help Missy.
Meanwhile, the men had put the word out around the trailer park that they had âcaptured a white woman.â Three more men, sailors stationed at the Charleston Naval Base, arrived to take their turns raping Missy. After several hours, the men were satiated. The sailors left. Mack, Williams and Gardner decided to try to get rid of the evidence. They carried Missy to the bathtub and soaked her in bleach and hydrogen peroxide, using a nylon brush to scrub her skin. They even scrubbed out her vagina with bleach and peroxide.
While they were washing her, they discussed ways to kill her. They handcuffed and blindfolded Missy. Then they covered her with a coat and carried her to a car, forcing her down onto the back seat floorboard. They drove for a few minutes out of town. Missy managed to get out of the handcuffs and began to scream and struggle.
