“We have a problem.”

Those were the first words Katherine said as soon as Morgan and Sarah showed up to her summons. It had only been a couple of days since Grace and the others had entered the Central Kingdom, but everyone had been very busy, gathering their forces and marching them toward the border.

Morgan and Sarah had spent that time circling the dome, trying to see if there might be any weak points where they would have luck breaking through. They’d been called back however, as Katherine had sent them an urgent communication.

“What’s the problem?” Morgan asked, noting that Le’vine was present, along with Hu Kiln.

Seeing as they were currently in the North, in Katherine’s palace, it was a bit unusual, especially seeing as they should have been home, gathering their armies.

“People are disappearing,” Katherine said. “And we don’t know how.”

“You’re right,” Morgan said, feeling his lips turn down in a frown. “That is a problem. I take it that the North isn’t the only one experiencing these issues?”

“Villages dotting our countryside are suddenly empty,” Le’vine said. “I would have thought it was our own Pinnacle King on the rise, except it’s happening in all the Kingdoms.”

“Why isn’t Beatrice here?” Sarah asked. “Is she not concerned about her people?”

“She’s overseeing the movements of her troops personally,” Katherine said. “Like we should all be doing. She sent a messenger to let us know about the disappearances though, and I have a direct line of contact with her.”

“So what you’re saying is that they’re not disappearing around the border,” Morgan said.

“Exactly,” Hu Kiln said. “We’ve all been keeping a pretty close eye on the border towns and villages, expecting that any disappearances might happen there.”

“It seems our enemy is quite clever,” Katherine continued. “Knowing that we would guard our borders well, they’ve somehow managed to infiltrate deeper into our lands and target some of the areas further away.”

“What we can’t figure out is how,” Le’vine said, sounding frustrated. “I’ve had soldiers patrolling the borders night and day. Nothing should have been able to slip past without our noticing.”

“Are there no blind spots?” Morgan asked. “Areas that are too difficult to patrol?”

“A few,” Le’vine said with a shrug. “Some sheer cliffs. Towering natural formations and the like. Areas that would be impossible to cross.”

“There’s no such thing as an impossible crossing,” Morgan said. “Send your troops to those areas. You might find that our enemies are slipping in that way.”

“In the meantime,” Katherine said. “I think it would be prudent to start pulling everyone we can toward the main cities. Ones with fortifications. They’re more easily defendable and we won’t have to spread our troops so thin, trying to protect everyone.”

“I’m already working on that,” Hu Kiln said. “But it’s a difficult undertaking, especially seeing as I need troops marching toward the border.”

He let out a long sigh, rubbing at his temples. He looked as though he hadn’t slept in weeks, which may very well have been the case.

“Our armies are stretched too thin.
