Chapter Four

“You’ll never be too much for someone

who can’t get enough of you.”—Anonymous

Matteo

The wind billows, lifting the sea into cresting white caps, yet the yacht plows through the stormy waters. I set this course—to our destination—a quiet cove, miles south, far from Sorrento, and away from prying eyes. I grip the railing—my feet braced apart. I turn at the lilting singsong of Hattie’s voice.

“Hey, Matteo, there you are. I like your suit—classic black. And very European. I had you figured for a board-short kind of guy.” Hattie smiles and then giggles.

The trill of her laughter sings to my soul.

My white terry-towel bathrobe skims her ankles but cannot hide the swell of her breasts or the curve of her hips. Still wet from her shower, her hair hangs down her back in ringed curls, her face flushed a rosy shade of pink.

I gape at the beauty before me, my breath hitching. My cock responds, straining my swimsuit. My balls tighten.

“I hope you don’t mind. I found the robe in your bathroom.” She draws her thumbs inside the lapels, her hands resting over her breasts—painting my mind with one thing and one thing alone. She rouses a need I have denied for so long.

“My robe suits you.”

“Do you think?”

“How are you feeling? Refreshed?”

“Those jets? Wicked. This yacht? Made for pleasure, ayuh? What do you do with it, Matteo? Sail the seven seas? Search for treasure? Catch pirates?”

“I am the only pirate on board, I can assure you.”

“Listen, Matteo. I’m confused. What do you do for a living? How can you afford all of this? This yacht…I know it’s none of my business, but I don’t run off into the sunset with handsome pirates.” She flips her hands in the air, chuffing a heated breath.

“You think I’m handsome?”

“I’m not that girl. I take my time. I plan things out. I make lists.”

“Can you deny the sparks between us?”

“I’m supposed to go home. I have a job.”

“I can be your home, Micetta.”

“Just like that, you want to hitch your wagon to mine. Tempting, Matteo. You know how to charm a girl. I’ll give you that.”

“Would it matter? What I do for a living?” I smirk, pressing my lips together.

“It might. It would. Of course, it would.”

“You fill my heart with happiness. Is that not enough?” I close the gap, resting my hands on her shoulders.

“And tomorrow and the next day and the day after that? Nothing lasts forever, Matteo. What you’re asking? I don’t take chances. That’s not who I am. At least, that’s not who I’ve been.”

“I want to show you the world. I want to be with you.” How can I make her see?

“You’re serious, aren’t you?”

“Do I make you happy, Micetta? Do I please you?”

“Do you please me? This is crazy.” She walks beyond me and grips the railing, staring over the sea into the distant horizon.

Trailing behind her, I circle my arms around her waist, inhaling her scent—lemon soap, a recipe I know well, one perfected on a farm high in the Lattari hills.
