Dylan, smile!” Mom commands.

“Mom,” I say through clenched teeth, my eyebrows raised as high as they can go, my sad attempt at yet another smile. “I’m sitting in the back seat of a moving vehicle. In the dark. This is not gonna be a very interesting picture.”

She takes the picture anyway. Dad’s at the wheel. After he won a rousing game of best two out of three in rock-paper-scissors—the only contest Mom and Dad could think of to see who gets to take me to the airport—Aunt Edith had mercy and swore she’d stop drinking long enough to watch Mikey and Chloe so they could both take me.

“Did Legend text you back yet?” Dad asks.

“Oh, yeah. I forgot to tell you. He said you guys can come with me through security so you can see the plane.”

“We can?” Dad squeals and pulls on the steering wheel. “Omigosh!”

Mom places a hand on Dad’s knee, and instead of chastising him for saying omigosh and squealing like a pig, she asks, “I wonder if he’ll let us look inside the cockpit and meet the pilot.” Mom twists around to face me. “Wait, is there a copilot too?”

Before I have a chance to answer, Dad replies, “Honey, it’s a Learjet. Pretty sure there’s a copilot.”

My phone chimes. I look down at the screen to see another text from Legend. His record label sent a car to pick him up about an hour ago. Apparently, he had to tend to all the logistics of getting his plane from the storage hangar and ready for the short flight to Des Moines and didn’t want me to have to wait with him.

Just met the pilots. All set. You close?

I look up in time to see our car whiz under a highway sign for Southwest Regional Airport. Since we don’t have an airport in Hornsborough, we have to take a twenty-minute drive to the neighboring town of Burlington anytime we need to fly somewhere. I text back.

About five away.

I decided to change up my normal jeans and sweater with a cute asymmetrical skirt, leggings, black heeled boots, and a pretty silvery-gray blouse to match tonight’s gray eyes. Hair slick straight and parted down the middle. And Mom let me borrow her black leather jacket.

“You look so cute.” Mom’s back to holding up the phone and snapping pictures. “Doesn’t she look cute tonight, honey?”

“She always looks amazing.” Dad flips on his blinker and speeds around a slow-moving truck. “Do you think Legend’s plane’s been customized?”

I tune Mom and Dad out as they discuss Legend’s jet. My phone’s ringing. I look down, expecting it to be Legend. Surprised to see it’s a video call coming in from Derica, I tap the screen to answer.

“Dylan! Hi! So good to see your face!”

“Is that my dear Derica?” Mom twists around in her seat, and I turn the phone so she can say hi. “We’re taking good care of your son. He’s in the best of hands with the Woods family.”

“Oh, trust me. I know,” Derica says.
