Chapter Fifteen

Lexi

Tuesday evenings had started to become my favorite. Not only did Shay bless my crown, but she was also full of banter and gossip, and I loved every minute of it. I walked into the salon and sat ready for Farrah to let me know to head back to the shampoo bowl.

Farrah yelled, “Lexi,” unlike the ‘dear’ that she usually called me. I stared at her as I stood from the seat. “Go ahead back to the shampoo bowl.” She cleared her throat and looked back at her computer as I walked past her.

“Shay,” I shouted, “hey girl.”

But her response wasn’t like usual either. She looked at me with a smirk, and asked, “Lexi,” in a stern tone, “wash and style today?” I nodded my head and as I got comfortable in the seat, I looked up at her while she washed and conditioned my hair. Shay avoided all eye contact though. “You can move to my chair,” she said after wrapping a towel around my head.

When I sat in her chair, I asked, “Shay, what’s going on?” I looked around the shop at the other women laughing and talking. “Everything good?”

“It looks like your curls are responding to the humidity now, so I am going to change your products. If they don’t work as expected, next time you are here, we’ll make an adjustment.” She started pinning my hair, completely ignoring the question I asked.

Shay and I had become friends, or so I thought. Of all the women in the town, she was the only one who wasn’t trying to ruin my reputation or wasn’t upset that I was a newcomer.

“Shay,” when she still didn’t respond, I just said, “you know what, I used to think it was crazy when my mama said, ‘don’t let everybody pray for you,’ but now I understand. I can’t have someone pissed for whatever reason touching my head.” I tugged the cape off me. “Don’t worry, I’ll pay for your services.”

I walked to Farrah, pulling clips from my head as I told her, “I’d just like to pay and get out of here.”

She looked over her shoulder then back to me before she told me, “Sure thing,” as she reached for my card.

My hair was all over my head, damp and a complete mess by the time I stepped onto the sidewalk. I stepped aside and searched my purse for a hair tie, which I could not find. “Shit,” I mumbled.

And then I heard someone snickering as they approached. “Problem, Lexi?” I looked up into Jessica’s eyes and took a deep breath before I turned and walked away, not dignifying her smug ass remark with a response.

Defeat found its glory in my car when my head fell forward to the steering wheel, my mess of hair dangling around it. In high school, middle school, and elementary, I made it through each without being bullied. I wasn’t the target for the mean girls and didn’t participate in their bullshit. Being a grown ass woman subject to Jessica and all her ways was taking a toll on me.
