After being named the best Latin American soccer player in La Liga in 2004, Ronaldinho posed for pictures with his mother.

So in 2001, he signed with a five-year contract with the French club Paris Saint-Germain that was worth millions of dollars. Ronaldinho was now a rich man. But because he didn’t sign with one of the major teams like Barcelona, Arsenal, or Manchester United, his old team Grêmio received no compensation for him.

It is usual for the new team to pay a hefty sum of money to the player’s old team—in this case Grêmio. Even though he did nothing wrong and followed the rules exactly, many Brazilian fans became angry with him.

That started what was a rocky time for him in France. Everything went great the first year there. Ronaldinho brought his family with him to live there, and he played very well, winning over French fans every time he played.
