Chapter 12

The shrill ring of Kaden's phone shattered the silence of the early morning, jolting him awake from his fitful sleep. Groggy and disoriented, he fumbled for his phone on the nightstand, squinting at the bright screen as he answered the call.

“Kaden Jacobs, speaking,” he greeted automatically, his voice rough with sleep.

“Good morning, Mr. Jacobs,” came the smooth voice on the other end of the line. “This is Allison Holt from Grayson Publishing. I hope I'm not catching you at a bad time.”

Kaden's heart skipped a beat as he sat up straighter in bed, the fog of sleep dissipating in an instant. Grayson Publishing – the name sent a surge of excitement coursing through him. This was it – the moment he had been waiting for.

“Not at all, Ms. Holt,” he replied, his voice glowing with excitement. “What can I do for you?”

“I'm calling about your manuscript,” Allison continued, her tone professional yet conducted with enthusiasm. “We were very impressed with the sample you sent us, and we'd like to discuss the possibility of acquiring the full manuscript.”

Kaden's heart soared at the words, a rush of adrenaline flooding his veins. This was the breakthrough he had been dreaming of – the chance to finally see his book published by a major publishing house.

“That's fantastic news!” he exclaimed, unable to contain his excitement. “I'd love to meet with you to discuss the details.”

Allison chuckled at his enthusiasm. “We're thrilled to hear that, Mr. Jacobs. How about we schedule a meeting for later this coming week? Say, Thursday afternoon at two? We can also do Zoom if you prefer.”

Kaden nodded eagerly, a grin spreading across his face. “Thursday sounds perfect. I'll make sure to clear my schedule.”

“Excellent. We'll send you the details shortly. Looking forward to meeting you face to face, Mr. Jacobs.”

“Likewise, Ms. Holt. Thank you so much for this opportunity.”

As he hung up the phone, Kaden couldn't wipe the smile from his face. This was it – his chance to finally make his dreams a reality. And as he regarded Lila's childhood bedroom, a sense of hope and excitement filled him. Despite the chaos and uncertainty swirling around him, he knew that better days were ahead. After hanging up, Kaden wasted no time in pulling up his story on his laptop, eager to prepare it for submission. There was a fumbling of the doorknob to the bedroom door, followed by a knock. Kaden slipped from the bed to unlock it, finding Lila on the other side looking puzzled.

“What’s with the locked door?” she asked, as Kaden twisted up his lips before answering her truthfully.

“Safety measures.” He admitted before opening the door wider to allow her in. Damned if Florence would barge in on him again unannounced and he was glad that he wouldn’t have to worry about it after today. Lila noted the clutter around the room, taking in the haphazard mess on the bed where Kaden had his open laptop and a myriad of papers scattered nearby.

“Looks like a tornado or something came through here.
