The trail of almost a dozen horses was easy to find in brush not far south of the rail line. And in places he found blood, a few drops here and there.

“One of ’em’s wounded,” he told himself, pausing long enough to read messages left in the caliche.

The hoofprints led almost due south, the shortest route to the Rio Grande. He urged his long-gaited thoroughbred to a lope, for this trail would be easy to follow... until it got dark.

A warm wind blew from the west as his horse sent up swirls of yellow-white dust from its hooves. To an experienced eye it would be announcing his presence. But by now, Slocum was certain, the outlaws were in Mexico, perhaps already enjoying the fruits of their ill-gotten gains. If he could find them, the celebration might not last as long as they’d figured.
