The Trial

Monday morning, Slim was up early. He had told Hooche to come by and pick him up at exactly 7:00am. He had put on one of his nicer suits, ate some breakfast, and was waiting out front when Hooche pulled up. Hooche never killed the motor. Slim jumped in and down the driveway they went. He had his fancy leather briefcase in his lap- the one he always took with him to court.

Hooche looked over at him and said, “Well, you ready?”

Slim smiled and said, “One always thinks he’s ready until the unforeseeable or unexpected happens, and then you really find out if you’re ready.”

“Talk like that makes me nervous,” said Hooche, “and I ain’t even the one on trial. What’s going to happen today, and what do you want me to do?”

“The jury will be picked this morning,” said Slim, “I’m sure they will try and load it down with friends, relatives, and favor owers, but I won’t contest much. I really don’t care who they put on the jury. If my plan goes accordingly, it will never get to them.”

Hooche just shook his head up and down like he understood.

“As for you,” said Slim, “I just need you close at all times. I don’t trust anyone down there, and I certainly don’t want to get shot in the back by someone in the audience while the proceedings are going on. In other words, don’t be watching me and listening to what I’m doing. That’s not important. Keep an eye on everyone else. If anyone pulls a gun or jumps up and heads toward me, kill him. Understand?”

“Absolutely,” said Hooche.

“Remember,” said Slim, “they know who you are, so watch yourself, and don’t put it past a woman pulling a gun, but above all, don’t hesitate.”

“You just worry about the trial,” said Hooche, “I’ve got your back.”

As they drove on down the road, Hooche didn’t say anything else to Slim. He was giving Slim time to think.

In about 15 minutes or so, they were pulling up in front of the courthouse. Slim didn’t say a word. He got his briefcase off the back seat of the car and walked up the steps into the courthouse. From there, it was up another set of steps into the courtroom.

Elmo was already there, and Slim went over to him.

“Did you drop Jr. off at the Sheriff’s office?” Slim asked.

Elmo said, “Yes. What’s going to happen now, Slim?”

Slim could look at him and see he was nervous.

“Look,” said Slim, “don’t worry, you just do what I told you and everything is going to be alright. We’re going to pick the jury today. That is all that is going to happen.”

“How long will that take?” asked Elmo.

“Oh, not long,” said Slim, “you should be home in time for lunch.”

“How do you know it’s not going to take long?”

“Because,” said Slim, “I’m going to let them seat just about anybody they want to on the jury. I don’t foresee objecting to anyone. Unless they try to put his mama or grandma on there, I don’t want to look too obvious.
