Chapter nine

Cassandra

I slam my head onto my desk, defeated. I should have known. I should have told somebody right away. But I never even imagined that someone would drag me through the mud like that.

I’m not being fired, but I know management will now look for anything to fire me. Horne and Coach both promised me that would never happen, but I know there’s only so much they can do. And there is no way in hell I would let all of them destroy their careers just to stand up for me.

Then there’s Lucas. He defended me, stood up for me.

But why?

There’s no way he changed his mind about me. Then again, he wanted to talk to me when we first came in.

I shake my head and try to focus on uploading some pictures from the game the other night. I need to push Lucas out of my head. I have a job, which is in jeopardy, to focus on. No dreaming about Sarkozy and what could have changed these past few days.

A tiger can't change his stripes….

Looking out my little window, I check to see if any of the guys are still here. With the locker room empty, I can escape without having to talk to anybody. All the guys are great, but I just want to go home and binge my shows while stuffing my face with ice cream.

Opening the door, I slide out just to come face to face with Lucas.

“I’m ready for my interview.”

“What?”

He grins, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. “My interview. I’m ready.”

“I, uh. I was kinda heading home right now.”

“It’s now or never, D’amato.”

Lucas flashes me this to-die-for smirk and once again, I’m putty in his stupid hands. I'm a sucker. Like every other puck bunny, I can't say no to Lucas Sarkozy.

“Okay. Let me get the camera set up.”

I head back into my office and grab the tripod and phone, setting it up in front of Lucas.

“Let’s start with the basics. Name, team, position.”

Lucas nods and turns on his character. “Yo. Sarkozy here, Captain of the Vikings. Number nine. I play center.”

“Great. Tell us how you came up in the hockey world.”

“Like most, I grew up in a small town where hockey was life. But I didn’t have the chance to play like everybody else. I played on the community teams, hand-me-down uniforms. Hockey was my escape from the hell at home. I, uh, didn’t have the best home life. Like I said, I don’t have some feel-good story.”

I clear my throat and look up at Lucas. “You don’t have to talk about it. Really.”

“It’s okay. I think it’s time. I grew up in a broken home. Dad came and went. Beat on me and mum. She worked hard, but drugs consumed her life. Hockey saved me. It was my ticket out of that town. So I worked my ass off, and as soon as I could, I hightailed it out of there.”

“And now?”

He grins. “Now, I’m here. Playing the game I love. With teammates who have become my family.
