âLetâs ask Resa if she wants to sing with us,â I said. âMaybe if she says yes, then Saki and Natalie and Pablo will all say yes.â
Scarlett, Victoria, and Mara were standing by the doors.
Scarlett saw me and started laughing. And then Victoria and Mara did, too. They were laughing at my hair.
The sound of laughter is a happy thing, my dad says. Well, itâs not a happy sound when mean girls are laughing at your hair.
I did the only thing I could think of doing. I turned around and started to walk home.
The bell rang.
Phillip chased after me. âLucy, what are you doing?â
âIâm feeling sick,â I said. âIâm going home.â
âIâm feeling sick, too,â Phillip said. âI think Iâll go home.â
He took another sip.
âPhillip, why are you drinking when you feel sick?â
He got a funny look on his face. âIâm trying to grow faster.â
What Scarlett had said about being short had gotten to him! Poor Phillip. I knew how he felt.
We made it to where the sidewalk started when Mr. Hopkin saw us. He had morning bus duty.
âWrong direction,â he said.
âI need to go home,â Phillip said. âI have a problem with my stomach.â
âI need to go home, too,â I said. âI have a problem with my head.â
He turned us both around and pointed us toward the school doors. âGet to class. No dawdling. No stopping. Youâre already late.â
What would Mr. Hopkin know about bad hair? He doesnât even have any!
As we walked back into the building, Phillip started burping. Quickly, I pulled the hair bands off and undid all the braids. It felt different.
âIs my hair puffy?â I asked Phillip.
âVery.â He nodded and rubbed his stomach. He looked even more sick.
âI think sleeping with my hair braided made it wavy,â I said. âDoes it look good?â
He shrugged. âI liked it fine the old way.â
It was the nicest thing anybody ever said to me. He was about to take the last sip of milk, but I stopped him. âPhillip Lee, you are not too short.â
He gave me a weak smile and tossed the carton into a recycling bin.
By the time we walked in, everybody had put away their backpacks and were sitting at their desks. They all looked at us.
And then Scarlett started laughing. Again.
I went over to the mirror by Mr. Chomperâs cage and looked. The bottom half of my hair was crazy wavy. The top half of my hair was sticking up. Even Mr. Chomper the hamster was laughing.
