The placid professional mask Damaris slipped into place hid a torrent of emotions. What the heck just happened? The kiss was something she’d later unpack. But why had a simple erection unnerved her? She wasn’t unfamiliar with the male anatomy. She and Matthew had honored the church’s mandate to not have intercourse until marriage but they hadn’t exactly remained chaste. They’d explored each other’s bodies. One time, Matt had even asked her to kiss him “there.” She’d been filled with guilt afterward but in the moment, the act was exciting.

That her patient had gotten and seemed to be maintaining a healthy erection should not have surprised her. From advanced studies she knew this could occur and the reasons behind it. What bothered her were the less than professional feelings swirling around her heart. Why was she having such difficulty maintaining control of them? Damaris prided herself on being able to remain compassionate yet emotionally detached from each patient she tended. Her mentor had assured it would benefit her long-term. Easier said than done. Even harder when her eyes traveled from his groin to his face to find him silently watching her. She willed the floor to open up and swallow her whole. When it didn’t, she tried to mask her nervousness with a medical explanation.

“What you’re experiencing is most likely a reflexogenic erection,” she said calmly, as though talking about the weather. “The nerve endings controlling tumescence remain intact.”

“Tumescence?”

“The, um, instrument becoming engorged.”

“My penis?”

Was that a gleam Damaris detected in Noah’s eye? She squared her shoulders and lifted her chin. She would not be intimidated. She was a professional. She could do this!

“Yes, Noah, your penis.”

“What did you call it? A reflex...”

“Reflexogenic reaction.”

“Not usually the way my body responds to a simple kiss.”

Simple? Seriously? There was nothing simple about it. Damaris remained quiet and tried to control the oncoming blush but felt her face grow warm. Instead of feeling more in control by facing what had happened to her patient head-on, Damaris had gone from the frying pan into the fire. A part of her wanted to flee to the sanctity of her home. But Damaris wasn’t a quitter. When she started a job, she finished it.

“If the nerves are working, why can’t I feel it?”

“That is probably a conversation best had with Travis, or one of the specialists.” She began bending Noah’s legs, performing the exercises Travis had detailed in the email he’d sent. “I’m sure that is only one of several questions you have regarding how the paralysis will affect your life in that area.”

“I apologize if the question made you uncomfortable.”

“Accepted.”

Damaris wanted to say that she’d not been bothered at all but lying could lead to more questions. Instead of talking she focused on the exercises Travis had outlined. The massages, he’d explained via the messages, were designed to stimulate circulation and improve the patient’s overall health. Blood was definitely circulating, Damaris thought, willing herself not to blush again.

For the next two days, Damaris was spared from
