hen he got up the next morning Walter found Cam standing outside studying the hillsides near the house.
âCouldnât you sleep, lad?â
âIâve never needed a lot of sleep and Iâm an early morning person.â
âMe, too. Letâs walk round the nearest fields. I like to check that the sheep are all right, even though I donât look after them myself these days. Itâll give you a bit of a feel for this sort of land.â
âIâve never farmed sheep. Theyâre not common in our part of the world. If I ask any questions that sound stupid, please bear with me. Iâm a quick learner.â
âSheep like these do well on the moors here, because theyâre hardy. Thereâs shelter in the sheds in the lower fields during the worst of winter. Iâve never kept a big flock, though, and a neighbour looks after them now.â
Cam listened with obvious interest to explanations, asking intelligent questions, and by hell, the longer Walter spent with him, the more he liked him.
But there was still something that seemed not to fit the type of person heâd been told to expect. He didnât like any sort of mystery about someone who might inherit the family farm.
When they got back to the farmhouse, they saw bread on the table, a toasting fork next to the open fire of the cooking range and bacon to hand on a plate near a frying pan. Bryn was already tucking into a hearty meal while chatting to the two women, who were waiting to cook breakfast for the others.
After everyone had eaten their fill, Walter said, âWhy donât you two lasses take Bryn and Cam for a walk down to the lake? Itâs such a sunny morning youâll see it at its best. And youâll get a good idea of what our valley is like by walking round some of it.â
Four people stared at him, clearly surprised by this suggestion, then Maude said, âIf you donât need us for a while, Cousin Walter, Iâd like that. The lake is one of my favourite places. Sometimes the water glints so brightly you feel as if you could pick up a handful of silver.â
Cam turned to his grandfather. âYouâre sure thereâs nothing we can do to help you?â
âNot till youâre properly recovered from travelling.â
âYouâll have to leave me out, Iâm afraid,â Elinor said. âI need to bake another batch of bread.â
âWell, as I have a bit of business to sort out in Ollerthwaite, itâd suit me to have the morning free. And I could bring some loaves back, Elinor, and save you the trouble. Iâd not like you to miss out on a walk with your friends, especially on such a lovely day as this.â
She stared at him, then at Maude as if asking her friend what to do. âWell, I would like to go down to the lake. Itâs my favourite place.â
Maude put an arm round her. âMine too. Iâd hate to move away from here. I love the valley already.â
They set off soon afterwards, with
