Chapter Twenty-Three
Just as Miss Susan had said, we did have guests on Christmas Eve who were alone, looking for warmth, comfort, and good food.
The fire was indeed warm, and Miss Susan had hung holly and mistletoe inside, as well.
âYou mind yourself around that mistletoe,â Miss Susan said while we cleaned on the morning of Christmas Eve. âWho knows who will try to kiss you if they catch you there?â
âHenry did say he was coming,â I said, smiling coyly.
âMake sure those guests are taken care of first before you two do any funny stuff,â she said.
I laughed. âIâm not doing any funny stuff, Miss Susan.â
âIt might not be up to you,â she said. âItâs bad luck to refuse a kiss under the mistletoe. Thatâs why you have to mind yourself.â
âYes, maâam,â I said. âBut I donât believe in bad luck, so Henry will just have to find out if I want to be kissed or not.â
She gave me a concerned lookâa real one this time.
âYou donât believe in bad luck?â she asked.
âI believe that whatâs going to happen is going to happen,â I said. âSometimes itâs bad and sometimes itâs good. Me refusing to kiss some boy wonât change it.â
âHm,â she said. âI guess thatâs rather brave of you.â
âBrave?â I asked.
âYes, brave,â she said. âTo tempt God in that way.â
I laughed. âWhat has God got to do with it?â
âOh, Rosaleen,â she said. âJust stay away from that mistletoe! Itâs not for you, anyhow.â
I raised my eyebrows and stopped sweeping. âIs it for you?â I asked.
She rolled her eyes and walked into the kitchen without answering.
Well, thatâs mysterious, I thought. I told myself to watch out for any man friends of Miss Susanâs, hanging around the mistletoe.
Marie made a delicious feast for dinner, with roasted turkey, roasted pig, and boiled ham. The lonely guests seemed pleased by it.
As Marie and I cleaned the dishes, I told her about Miss Susan and the mistletoe. She was also intrigued.
âDid a man show up?â she asked me.
âNo,â I said. âLuckily, Florence came in just as dinner was ending. Hopefully that cheers her up.â
Marie nodded. âI canât believe Lydia finally brought my baby niece into this world,â she said. âIâm going to go meet her when weâre done. I know I wonât be much help since I have to be back here for supper, but I just have to meet her.â She smiled dreamily.
âGive her a kiss from me, too, wonât you?â I asked.
Marie nodded. âOf course,â she said. âIs Henry coming for tea?â
âHe might,â I said. âOr he might come tomorrow. Or not at all.â
âCan I ask whatâs going on with you two?â she asked.
âYou can,â I said. âI just donât know. Nothing, I think. But then I see him and heâs so handsome and kind and then I think I do like him.â
Marie nodded. âI understand.â
âIâll finish these dishes,â I said. âGo see baby Angel.â
âOh, thank you!â Marie said, and quickly dried her hands.
When I was done, I helped Miss Susan show the guests to their rooms and began to clean the dining room.
