I walk inside and place my things on the counter. Madison’s on the couch, watching television. I join her and place a kiss on the side of her head, wishing I didn’t need to have this conversation.

“How was golf?”

Before I can answer her question, I quickly tell her about Paris’s attack and don’t stop until I finish.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart. Paris came out of nowhere.”

She sighs and laughs, making me wonder what the hell is so funny. “I heard about it at the spa. Some of the women heard about what happened and were talking about it. They didn’t see me with Kaylee. It was annoying, and I was upset, but thank you for telling me. I guess now that I’m Mrs. Hunter, the women of your past are going to start coming out and try to be the other woman?”

“I don’t want you to think that. I will never hurt you, sweetheart. I don’t care about those other women. They’re my past, and you are my future.”

Madison places her head on my shoulder and pats my hand. We stay like this for a while, and I’m perfectly content to watch mindless reality television with my wife.
