The theater they went to was the same historic one that had hosted the fundraising premiere he’d accompanied his father to earlier in the year. A doorman let them into the ornate lobby, and Kat slowed to a stop as a longhaired bearded man came down the carpeted marble staircase from the balcony area.

“Prince Christian, it’s wonderful to see you again. I can’t tell you how much your contribution to this project helped us along. I was honored when you requested a private showing. I hope you won’t mind being my “practice audience’ before we take part in our first film festival in Toronto.” He extended his hand to Kat and C.J. introduced them.

“Mr. Wahl is also interested in history and has been wanting to bring this project to the screen for quite some time. A family friend from Austria introduced us, and I contributed to the crowdfunding campaign.”

“We couldn’t have done it without you.” He handed them each a small booklet that encapsulated the information on the fundraising site and the real history behind the project based on the lives and love between John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and his third wife, Katherine Swynford.

Kat squeezed his hand. He remembered everything they’d spoken about at their first dinner. When she mentioned having read both fact and fiction on John and Katherine, he knew he’d find a way for her to see this film. He only hoped it would live up to her expectations. C.J. pulled his attention back to the filmmaker when he spoke again.

“I had a mentor with major film credits during my undergrad days at UCLA. He loved the inspiration, but insisted I reinterpret it into a modern setting and play up the long term affair and monarch’s mistress part of things.” Mr. Wahl smiled and slid his hands into his pockets. “I can’t say there weren’t days I regretted keeping to my original vision, but once the crowdfunding began showing promise, I knew I couldn’t take the easier path.”

He led them across the thick carpet and into the theater to the seats he selected for the optimum viewing experience. “This is the ‘Director’s Cut’ so it runs a little long. Depending on other feedback, we may need to do further editing before festival showings, but I’ve given the projectionist an intermission stopping point.” He gestured to the seats. “I’ll be seated in the back row and have arranged to have some light refreshments set up for the break.”
