“I know about the crystal, Vin,” The Boss said.

“What! So, I came back for nothing? But how do you know already?”

“Salli told me.”

“She’s here?” Vin asked.

“She was. She’s gone to the apes’ town. Come on. I’ll tell you all about it over dinner.”

The Boss took his arm, guiding him towards the Guards’ Academy. “One thing though, Vin. Sam didn’t make it. He didn’t survive the journey here.”

Vin stopped in his tracks, turning to face The Boss. “Sam’s dead? Oh, no!” his shoulders slumped, and his head fell onto his chest.

Vin suddenly felt the exhaustion of the mission, like a massive weight on him. He shook his head, but his neck felt like it wasn’t strong enough to hold up his head.

“I am sorry, Vin. I know he had a lot of respect for you. I sure wish I’d had a chance to meet him.”

“Salli must be devastated.”

“She’s the strongest woman I’ve ever met.”

“They’re all like that down there, Boss. You should meet Kerri.”

“I hope to one day. By the way, Kerri’s trying to rescue Carter.”

The Boss steered him towards the empty dining room of the Guards’ Academy. The long tables had already been cleared after the recruits’ evening meal. Vin pushed his pie around his plate while giving his report on the mission into the Lost Lands.

“Not hungry, Vin? That’s not like you.”

“I don’t have the stomach for it,” Vin said. Leaning back in his chair, he looked up at his boss. “There’s something odd…” Vin said. “I didn’t see one ape on the way home. I would have expected with Naz escaping, they would have been out searching, or at least covering the entrance to the passes, but I didn’t see one.”

The Boss ran his fingers through his beard and scratched his chin. “Hmm, that is strange. Tell me, what’s Naz’s plan?”

“He’s trying to pick up the apes’ trail to find where they’re taking the crystal. He’s gonna leave signs for me to follow. I shouldn’t’ve let him go off on his own on such a dangerous mission.”

“You followed your orders as a Guard should,” The Boss said. “I believe Naz did what he thought was best, and I completely trust his judgment. He tried to make sure we knew what was happening. We needed to know for sure the crystal had been lost, and we had to know that double-crossing, good-for-nothing, Sonny has betrayed us. Sometimes a boss has to make difficult decisions—but making those decisions is what makes a good leader. You weren’t to know Salli had been here.”

Vin sat staring at his pie, shaking his head.

“Anything else I should know?” the Boss asked.

“Oh yeh, Naz promoted me in the field. He made me Ranger Scout—First Class,” Vin said.

“Good move. I know you’ve earned it. I’ll deal with the paperwork.”

“It doesn’t feel like a good move thinking about Naz out there on his own. And he said you would up my rations.”

“He said what? Just for this mission or permanently?”

“Boss, this is no time to be counting pies.
