Chapter Four
Shelley knew she should stay at the boarding house and keep an eye on the little lad, but she needed to quickly head into the surgery to see a patient. Thankfully, it was just the one patient, and then she would go back. She had debated leaving the baby with Maria, who had been fawning over him, but he got rather fussy if she wasnât in the room. As soon as Beth had fed him, he immediately fell asleep, Shelley changed him and got him into a sling with Bethâs help. It was very quick in and out, and hopefully, Oliver would sleep long enough that she could sort out the woman who was nervous about having her first child. There were just a few problems, the birth might be breech and she needed reassuring. Shelley got the feeling she didnât have much support at home.
The baby was due in a couple of months and Shelley knew that her reassurance would go a long way in keeping the woman calm. Mothers needed a lot of support. It wasnât just physically they suffered in childbirth and afterward, it was mentally. Their emotions were all over the place, and some mothers ended up going so low in their moods it was frightening to see. But unless there was some support from the husband or the extended family, there wasnât much Shelley could do except suggest a few things to lift their spirits.
Those were the depressing households.
Shelley headed into the surgery and went to the small room Ernest Foster had allowed her to use when she needed to meet a mother. It was big enough for her needs, so Shelley could hardly complain. And Doctor Foster did try, even though he drove Shelley mad with his hot and cold attitude towards her. Shelley knew why all the Foster brothers were that way, but it made her want to shake them and knock their heads together.
Men. Shelley began to think she understood them, and then suddenly something happened and she was back to having no clue what had happened.
There was a small bassinet in the corner that was used to put a baby in when Shelley was checking the physical health of the mother. It was plenty big enough for Oliver, so Shelley put the bassinet on the floor and slipped him out of the sling, placing him into it. The little boy barely stirred as he settled into the small space. He looked so adorable sleeping. He was even more adorable when he was awake, and Shelleyâs heart swelled every time he laid his eyes on her.
His parents were blessed to have him. Shelley could only hope that they were found soon.
âHis nameâs Oliver.â
Shelley spun around. Adam was in the doorway, his face red like he had been running. He was also breathing heavily. Shelley smiled.
âOliver. Thatâs a good name. How did you find that out?â
âThe sheriff at Claysville telegraphed back to Chris. Oliver Leeson.â
âThatâs good.â Shelley rose to her feet. âWe can reunite them as soon as we let them know.
